I am a sophomore in highschool. I am an asian(indian) male. I want to pursue a field of Medicine or law. my school rank is 42 out of 748 people, and my GPA is 3.75 on a 4.0 scale. i was wondering if i have a any chance getting into “top tier” schools that are just under ivy’s.
Colleges look at a lot more than just your GPA and class rank.
They also look for meaningful ECs, wonderful essays, glowing recommendations, rigor of classes taken, among a number of other things.
Tulane, Fordham, University of Rochester, and your state flagship will be good schools to look at, and those are just off the top of my head. And that’s not even including any of the great liberal arts colleges out there.
I think what I’ve learned from peers on CC is that universities look at your transcript beyond your rank and grades. College admission officers want to see if you’ve committed yourself to certain extracurricular activities, clubs, and even community service. On a mental note, I would say you’re doing great so far. Make sure to expand and be open to joining clubs you want to be a part of (Don’t join something that doesn’t really interest you).
Being Asian won’t be an advantage, but it won’t hurt you much. Have some extra curricular activities and focus on your SAT. I’d say keep up the good GPA and rank, get involved in a few activities, and devote your free time towards the SAT.
But don’t devote too much time. The SAT is definitely important, but we don’t know the OP’s SAT/ACT score, and there are many other factors to take into consideration (EC’s/other activities, recommendation letters, courses taken).
