SU is very well known school in the Northeast and having a large student populous is advantageous in the way of Nationwide Alumni’s. This could very well be helpful when looking to land a career job.

Based on what you’ve provided, you should not have a problem being considered. After all, I’ve seen applicants on here who overqualified on CC here and were not accepted in the end. SU had around 27,000 applicants last year so you can imagine that it’s a matter of having a bit of luck along with your credits. SU considers students with a broad perspective of interests and likes diversity so those that might be lacking slightly with grade averages still have as good a chance. SU also appreciates applicants outside the Northeast in order to help their diversity mindset.

I know you’re far away, but if you’re really banking on SU, I would schedule a private campus visit with an admissions counselor during active semester period while students/teachers are available for a classroom monitoring. Your visit will be very likely be noted in the admissions counselors computer. I truly believe the physical visitation (especially from so far away) helps to show admissions that you are seriously interested. This is what tips the scale in your favor. Make contact with an admissions counselor right away and continue a dialogue so they can earmark your correspondence. DO NOT schedule your visit during open visitation on the weekends. Tell them that you can only make it on a certain weekday. You should seek special guidance and a tour possibly by a student volunteer also in the area of Education Major. Even if your campus tour has to be unguided, just checking in with admissions and scheduling an appointment with your counselor will help put a face to the name so to speak. My D was very fortunate in that we live in NY (3 hours away) and were able to make 3 visits. Out of 5 schools, SU became her dream school and now still enjoys everything about it while starting her 2nd year. As her Dad, I was also hooked on it but had to stay neutral until she had made up her mind as to which one she liked the most. She’s very lucky that I didn’t apply also and wind up as her roommate. If I had to do it all over again I would have appreciated attending SU back in my day.

She has been very thrilled with her professors in all her courses which is most important because I remember being frustrated when I had undesirable ones. I had failed a CALC111 course once because the professor just wasn’t conveying the subject well and then test on areas which he had not covered at all. I repeated the course the next semester and passed with an A-, that speaks for itself!

Visiting the SU campus is exhilarating. It just has a really nice layout being on a hilltop with a nice mix of old and new building architecture. Some huffing and puffing if you’re not in top shape. It has a very nice Mini-Metro feel with a few integrated hospitals next to the campus, giving it some city life. Downtown Syracuse is nearby with easy bus access although it’s not a draw. There are a few blocks of revival having shops and eateries that are worth a visit just to get off campus. What’s nice is that you have mass transportation to take wherever you want since Syracuse and it’s surrounding suburbs are a bit spread out. My D gets to the large mall if needed within 10 minutes by bus from campus. The school also has all sorts of activities going on constantly with specialty clubs or sporting events. SU has a huge school sports team spirit/supporters.

SU also has good ties to NY City which is important to many of the campus schools. They offer a good variety for studies abroad with great ties in Florence, Italy.

I would look to do some type of EC in the area of Education to show your specific focus. Try to visit the campus for sure. Cross country air fares to NY are pretty decent and you’ll not regret it in many ways. It’s a major step to make a physical appearance so make the time if this is where you really want to go. Let SU know that you want to be shaped and molded by them so you can become a proud Alumni. Oh, and don’t listen to those who may start about how cold it is - that’s what a nice new set of warm clothes is for and you’re not going to be sleeping out on the streets. The winters here in the North east have been mild the past few years and the school year goes by very quickly.

if i have a 2.8 and 1800 on my sat (but 9 aps and nationally ranked soccer player and good ec’s) should I even apply? early action?
