Still don't know what I'm going to major in. I figure if I have to declare, I'll declare environmental science/engineering and switch out if I dislike it. Need all the advice I can get.

Thank you!

I think that you would have a shot at the Arts and Sciences but may have more trouble getting into the engineering school. SU is very individual school focused and the different schools have very different criteria in terms of admission. You should definitely go to a local event when SU visits and arrange for an interview in advance. My D had a good experience with the admission staff who were very helpful in making decisions about what schools to apply for.

Thank you for replying! I’ll most likely go into environmental science first, then. I’m not even really sure if environmental engineering is what I possibly want to do.

But speaking of majors, do I have to declare a major in my application? I just read this:

So does this mean you pretty much just go through your general ed for the first year and a half, but apply for a particular school such as Newhouse or the Arts and Science college when you apply?

And what does it mean for a major to be ‘interdisciplinary’?

Lots of questions, haha.

Catwin - you don’t have to choose a major until the end of your sophomore year for most of the schools (ex: in the business school, you don’t have to pick your major until then but you have spent the first two years completing their core which is different for each school). However, if you know that you want to be in one of the specific schools, your best chance for admission is as a freshman. On the application, they will ask you to rank order three schools that you are interested in. If you say you are undecided, they will only consider you for CAS.
It is actually fairly difficult to transfer in to some of the schools once you are in. It is totally based on your college GPA and if they have room for you. You can always transfer into CAS. If there is a school that you are specifically interested in, I would try for it on your application.
Interdisciplinary means that a major goes across two academic departments.

Just a note on environmental science - SU somewhat “shares” its campus with a separate university, SUNY of Environmental Science and Forestry. If that’s your focus, you may want to look into that (I believe it is number 1 for that field).

Would my grades be good enough for SUNY-ESF? I’m a bit afraid that they won’t be. There were just so many things in the year that screwed me up.
