what are my chances!!

I'm a rising senior this year. I feel like my grades are absolutely fine, but I'm not so sure with my SATs. I plan on becoming a lawyer and majoring in Political Science and minoring in International Affairs.

My overall GPA (weighted) is a 4.4 (out of 5.0)
I know I'm top 20% of my class, maybe even 10% I'm not sure yet.
My senior year I'm taking AP Government and Politics, AP English V, Honors Pre-Calculus, Honors Italian V (highest Italian in my school), CP Physics (that may change to Honors). My electives I chose were Genocide, Psychology, and Constitutional Law.
I tried to make my schedule as rigorous as possible, so colleges knows I'm working hard and not slacking off my senior year.

Extra Curricular:
National Honor Society
Honor Roll since 9th grade
Editor of yearbook (been on it since 9th grade)
Italian Club
Cancer Awareness Club
Soccer and Basketball (Captain)- but only in 9th grade
I was a camp councilor for 2 years
I worked for another children parties' company for a year (they closed down)
I also do community service. Mostly for my church.

My SATs: I'm taking them one more time.
Math: 570
Reading: 500
Writing: 570
I was hoping in October I can receive around 1740 at least. I did not care about high school until my sophomore that's why my SATs aren't as great as you would expect them to be.

Syracuse is one of my top choices and I plan on doing an interview. I wrote my college essay on my different ethnicities and i think that best describes me (Writing is a strong suit of mine).
Also I didn't do anything this summer (job or community service) is that going to be a problem with Syracuse or really any college? I am though starting up community service again in the fall.

Let me know what you think! And any suggestion are appreciated! I will not take offense to anything anyone says, I just need some advice!

First of all, I am no expert on Syracuse or any other university, but I have gone through the admission process with two sons now. My second son got into Syracuse, Engineering for the fall 2010 good / high SAT’ 700;’s, but average GPA in everything expect Math & Science where he excels. (But majoring in engineering that was important I suppose.) The thing was he wasn’t focused until the middle of sophomore year. Then his grades were excellent, but it was difficult by that time to get the GPA to reflect who he was in jr/sr. years and what it should have been because of those six semesters. What he did have was an amazing UPWARD TREND. Junior and Senior years were excellent. But this didn’t matter to some of the Larger Flag Ship schools They seems to just take the highest SAT and the highest GPA students not matter what they say about “holistic review”. That having been say what I can tell you is this: It really depends upon the application pool of that year, for each school and a particular major. Syracuse does seem to want well rounded kids though. Just from looking at your info, I would say you have a pretty good shot. Take those SAT’s again in Oct., and since you are not doing anything this summer take a bunch of practice tests while you have the time. Definitely go back and volunteer. This is very important for all of the schools to see. Make sure other people think your essay has an impact when you read it. Once thing I can say is that you never do know for sure. I believe that Syracuse does look a little deeper (My son is proof of that; they really reviewed the whole picture, and not just the SAT, GPA numbers, and that is why he is going there.) When reviewing the numbers, if the GPA is high and the SAT’s are a bit lower that is considered a better situation than if the SAT’s are High and the GPA is Average to low. I read a ton of things about this last year regarding this topic and that was the generally consensus. In the end what I am saying is I think you have a good shot. If you can afford it, apply to every school you have interest in even if it’s a long shot. Syracuse was a long shot for my son….and in two weeks he will be there….Good Luck.

I agree with Donna54- you have a good shot. You would be applying to Arts and Sciences and that is an easier school to get into so your SAT’s wouldn’t hurt you that much. Work really hard your first half of senior year so you can show Syracuse how serious you are. Good luck.

i dont think you will have a problem getting into CAS. if your SAT’s go up…it’ll help but if they dont it wont really matter. i really think you will get in! you have good EC’s and a good GPA. and def interview!!! syracuse wants the students to show interest!!!
