In my freshman yr of college I had a 3.45 cumulative GPA for the year and made deans list for both semesters. After that I took off almost 2 years of school and went back this winter part time taking two classes. I scored a 3.0 GPA with an A in one class and a C in the other. I have pretty good extra curriculars and am a good writer so the essay should be easy. I am hispanic and would be a first generation college student. Do you think I have good chances? My GPA this past semester disappointed me but hopefully I will do better this semester. I am applying for the Fall.

Side Note--I know they ask transfers to submit HS grades but do they judge you on them?

I applied for the arts and sciences school pretty late…just last week a little over a month past the deadline but they were still reviewing applications. I was told that they will continue to review applications until they run out of room and that me applying late should not affect my chances…hopefully that is true. Does anyone happen to know if they judge transfers on high school grades? It doesn’t say anything about that on the website and when I asked a student on the information line he said that he THINKS they judge you on college grades ‘for the most part’. I really dont like dealing with students he didn’t seem to be really sure and admissions did not pick up their line.

If it says they require them, then they use them. Most schools use them if you have less than 30 college credits (completed), and they want your SAT’s also. What did you do with your two years off? If you had good work experience that could work in your favor, if you loafed around…not so much.

I didn’t ‘loaf’ around, I served in Americorps for a year and afterwards had an internship at a radio station.

It says that HS transcripts are required so that they can make sure you took the required number of years for math, science, etc but they are not specific on if they use those grades towards the actual decision of acceptance or not. Most schools I have seen require 21-24 credits to not judge you on HS grades and I already have more than that, but again Rutgers is not very specific on this. So vague, and the student workers dont really know the answers to these questions. But I do know that they do not require my SATs. That is something they did specify.
