I'm a high school student, and I'm going the dual enrollment route. I was told that I would enter as a freshman even if I have my AA degree degree, because I just graduated high school. Which is good, I want to be a freshman there because I haven't decided on my major yet. I'm either going to go with engineering or premed (I know, 2 VERY different fileds). Anyways, I have a 3.9 high school GPA and a 4.0 at the community college. Which means my overall GPA is probably above 4.0. I have no AP credits, and a lot of dual enrolled credits. Do you think I should take any AP classes? I'm currently debating on whether or not to take Calculus 1 and 2 at the community college, or take AP Calc AB and BC at my high school next year (senior year). I have almost 80 hours of volunteer hours at the library. I'm in Spanish Honor Society, Phi Theta Kappa (at CC), and I'm going to go into National Honor Society and Math Honor Society this year. Do I need more extracurriculars? Also, does taking private piano lessons count as an extracurricular? Does having a job count? I'm not really a sportsy person, and am not interested in that many clubs at my school. I haven't taken SAT or ACT yet, but I did take the PSAT, and scored and got 68 out of 80 in Critical Reading (95th percentile), 57 in Math (74th percentile), and 58 in Writing Skills (83rd percentile). Contrary to that score, I actually am very good in math and aced almost all my math classes. But I didn't answer all the questions, and double-checked too much because of nervousness and doubt.
Anyways, is this good enough, or do I need to work on some things? Are extracurriculars good enough? Do I need any AP credit, or is dual enrollment creidt good enough? Any suggestions would be great.

you do not say what year you are in? are you a junior? UF doesn’t look at your senior grades. Your GPA is calculated from 9-11th grade. I am taking 5 AP’s this year, I am a senior, the GPA doesn’t count but strength of schedule and college credit does count. I have 18 DE credits but I was told to stop the DE in junior year. Hope this helps.

Did they tell you that you’d be admitted as a freshman? You might want to get that in writing…

I was in your shoes about a year and a half ago. I graduated high school and, thanks to the early college program, I had an AA. I asked UF if there was anything special they wanted me to do and they said to just apply like a freshman. Sounded good, no?

Feb 13 (or whatever it was) rolled around and they didn’t update my status. I called and they said it was referred to my college for a final decision. Not sounding too good now.

Long story short, the University of Florida evaluates concurrent high school and AA degrees as if they were transfers. What does this mean?

1.) You must have the prereqs to get into your major.
Example: For engineering you need something like:
Calc I, II, III
Phy I, II
Chem I, II
This is what screwed me, since I didn’t have time to take those classes (I played some sports in high school)

2.) If you do get in, you can not change majors outside of your college. This means that if you got accepted into Mechanical Engineering, you can not change your major to physics, chemistry, english etc. You could, however, change it to Electrical eng, aerospace eng, etc.

Basically, I was not a happy camper. But sometimes the good you do does you no good. I actually got accepted into UF this year after going to UCF and Santa Fe. I love it here, but the whole experience was a huge turnoff.

If you want my advice, stop at 59 credit hours. It sucks that it has to come down to that, but until the admissions here stop and think about it, it will continue to happen. UF is the only University that I know of that does this.

They also put this up (or has it always been up?) after I was rejected:

Oh and this also happened to a friend that was in the early college program with me. But luckily I can tell others to stop at 59 credits.

Taking private lessons does not count as an EC. That’s like saying having a math tutor so you can get a better grade in your Calc class counts as an EC.

Dual enrollment is just as great as AP. I’m doing the dial enrollment track as well and when I spoke with a UF officer that came to my high school she reassured me that DE is perfectly fine. Good luck! :)

What?! I heard that I’d be a freshman from high school counselors, and I called UCF a while ago to verify it (a college I was thinking about, before I decided on UF). I’ll call UF counselors, but thanks for the advice. I really really want to go in as a freshman, and sadly, I don’t have the time to meet all the prereqs. One of my biggest fears is not being able to change majors, because I’m not sure, and I really need more time to decide. Thanks so much to everyone who’s answered

No problem. And yeah, I went to UCF my freshman year and they accepted me as a freshman. ALWAYS get at least two UF adviser’s opinions before you make your decision, though. I’ve always gotten different answer depending on what time of the day it is. I wish you the best of luck and hope you get in.

I was admitted as a freshman with 66 credits.

What year and major? Did you have your prereqs?
