Do I have a shot at Brown?

I am in my senior year right now and Brown is my top choice. I am planning to apply under ED. Do you think I have a good chance of getting in? I don’t think I have that big of a shot because I feel none of my ECs are extremely impressive.

Info:

  • Citizenship: Canada
  • GPA: our school doesn’t do GPA or any equivalent rankings, but definitely in top 15% or 10% for junior year and sophomore year (note: our school does have a strict marking system; for instance, some universities that only admit students with a 96 average admit students with 93.5s or 94s at our school and many universities know this)
  • Ethnicity: Asian
  • APs I have taken: English Lang, Chemistry, Stats, Calc AB (Canadian schools do not offer a lot of APs in general and not many students choose to take many AP classes)
  • APs I will take this year: English Lit, Bio, Macro, Micro, Calc BC, Environmental science (self-study perhaps)
  • Senior year course load: AP lit, AP calc, AP macro, AP micro, AP bio, French (not AP)
  • Concentration/areas of study: chemistry but undecided for the second possible concentration
  • Recommendation letters: one from chem teacher (she really liked me), one from french teacher (also really liked me and said i was one of the strongest students in the class), and one from probably my fencing coach, as well as a guidance councillor recommendation (she knows me pretty well and I have talked to her about where I want to apply)

Test scores:
ACT: score isn’t ready yet (took the September 2017 one) but expecting a 32/33 at least (did write the ACT twice before but score was not good)
SAT II: Math II (780), Chem (730); retaking Chem in October
APs: Stats - 5, Chem - 5, English lang - 4, calc - 4; earned AP scholar with distinction award

Summer program: only attended one summer program and it was the summer @ brown program during the summer before junior year; took a course in bacteriology

  • spent my past summer training in fencing for an important upcoming national selection event

Extracurriculars and leadership positions:

  • Ambassador at school (junior year, senior year; mentor leader this year and leads a team of 8 students and plan meetings, etc)
  • Chinese association of private independent schools in my area: (sophomore, junior, senior year; was a school coordinator during sophomore year, junior year head of events department, the list of leadership positions hasnt been finalized for this year yet) – we support an organization in rural areas of China annually fundraising through organizing talent shows and other events
  • Service leadership council at school (freshman, sophomore, junior year; house representative during sophomore and junior year and was the project leader for a few initiatives) – as a council we organize fundraising events throughout the school and support a community in Mali every year

Volunteer Experience:

  • Math tutor at a local elementary school for students from grade 3 to grade 6 (sophomore and junior year)

Athletics:

  • Fencing (haven’t been fencing for very long, but qualified for international competitions for the U17 age group however did not go due to very personal reasons; haven’t had lots of very impressive results); however I do spend most of my time on fencing

Others:

  • Three time school champion for a national mathematics contest my school writes every year (freshman, sophomore, junior year; we haven’t wrote the contest for this year yet); top 25% nationally for every contest I have written and was on the honour role with distinction a few times
  • School champion for a national chemistry contest and earned an outstanding achievement award (junior year)

Leave your comments below and I would appreciate it! If you have any suggestions for schools I should give a shot for EA or RA please also leave them below in the comments section!
(please be honest!!!)

If you are a good enough fencer to qualify for competing in the international tournament, then perhaps you may be recruitable for the fencing team at Brown. Brown isn’t known as the powerhouse fencing team unlike the HYP-C schools, and your chances of getting recruited may be better than at those other schools. Therefore, you may want to reach out to the coach asap to ask about recruitment. If you get recruited or at least be given admission support by the coach, it will only strengthen your chances of acceptance.
