I think your chances are good at NYU. For GU, you have to think more about why GU? And what makes you a good fit.

@preppedparent appreciate the quick reply! I don’t quite understand what you mean by why GU? If I am comprehending correctly, I picked Georgetown because I researched that most undergrads from GU get into medical school (assuming the correct credentials, of course). I also love the environment that has an active political side (DC), but is laid back enough to live my life there.

Definitely a strong candidate for NYU, moderately competitive for Georgetown

Hi there! I think poster #1 is referring to the supplemental for GU. I’m assuming why GU is a question they ask for an essay, similar to the “why NYU?” question on the NYU application. If I’m interpreting poster #1 correctly, Georgetown probably weighs the WHY GU essay heavily in your application process. Hope this helps!

Oh also! Don’t know much about GU, but I think you have good shots at NYU!

hmm, what you’re saying definitely makes sense! I was asked ‘why’ in both my essay and my alum interview, so that seems to be a strong contender. do you happen to know if I have a shot at financial aid with NYU? I could only afford the OOS tuition if I got at least a half-scholarship.

NYU is known for being very stingy with financial aid, but I wouldn’t let that stop you. If you don’t mind me asking, what is your financial situation like currently? Also note: I’m pretty sure NYU is need aware instead of need blind like most schools

I don’t have a lot of money for college. My brother is a university student as well and received no scholarships, so my family is fronting the full cost of his tuition. Additionally, I am an out of state resident (texas), and can really only (barely) afford to pay the in state tuition! I don’t mind you asking at all, but could I question why?

Georgetown “strongly recommends” three SAT II scores. Do you have that covered?

I am registered to take them, but I have not taken them yet! I am applying regular decision, so if I have taken it by then, do you believe it will be alright?

As long as you submit them with your app, its fine.

Just to help me determine if you’ll receive the scholarship you need, but I honestly have no clue. NYU is known to be not so giving with financial aid, but it’s unpredictable. Good luck! Make sure you still apply because you have a good shot!

@iheartNYU2021 I believe NYU is need-blind

OP - your stats are strong for NYU. For GU, note their acceptance rate is 17%; your SAT’s are strong. Note STEM2017’s note about subject tests…

alright, thank you so much!

Noted! I’d love to go to GU, but I’m fairly realistic and it’s my ‘dream school’! Thanks for responding!

If your high school uses Naviance check your stats against past applicants. Seems like Gtown has schools it will take several from every year- the other high school in our town is one of those that gets 5-8 in every year. The alum interviewer happens to live on that other side of town. Gtown cares about class rank too and yours isn’t great.

If you think instate Texas public schools are barely affordable think again whether- even with generous financial aid packages, which neither of these schools is known for- you can actually afford these schools. Cost of living in NY and DC is greater than all or most Texas cities and you will be spending hundreds of dollars on plane fare, winter gear, food and entertainment. And then you need to pay for med school? Hope you are looking at instate options or private schools with generous financial aid and consider the total costs you face for 4 years and beyond.

absolutely. I am taking into consideration all factors, but the truth of the matter is I can’t stand Texas. I have received my acceptance for UT Dallas and UT Austin, so I have a safe backup if I do not receive the financial aid I need to go OOS. I appreciate the sound advice though!
