Hey, I’m a high school senior in North Carolina. My top school is UNC-Chapel Hill. If i get in, I plan on studying Dental Hygiene, or Radiology. Not 100% sure yet. I’m very nervous about getting in because my SAT & ACT scores are a tad below the average. Other than that, I’m a well rounded student. I am a year round (3 sport) athlete, I have a 3.7 GPA (on the 4.0 scale), and take all honors classes. My ACT composite is a 25, and my SAT super score is a 1250 out of 1600 and 1640 out of 2400. I know they’re not the highest scores, but with my extracurricular activities, grades, and scores what are my realistic chances of getting in?
If you look at Sections C9 - C12 of the UNC-CH Common Data Set, you will see that your ACT and SAT are well below the 25% percentile of admitted students (as you probably already know).
Further, under Section C7 of the CDS it states that standardized test scores, application essay, letter(s) of recommendation, and rigor of your high school record are “very important” academic factors considered for freshman admission, whereas GPA and class rank are “important” academic factors considered for freshman admission.
Based on these data and criteria from the CDS – and specifically that standardized test scores carry more weight than GPA – my estimate is that your chances for admission are somewhat lower than 50-50. If you have written good essays and have good recommendations, however, that should improve your chances.
I’m in the same boat as you. Let me tell you some information about myself
* First-generation
* Asian
* Top 7% of my class
* GPA: 4.6
* Involved in many extracirricular activities
Like gandalf78 said from above, I am hoping that my essay and recommendations will improve my chances of getting accepted.
I wish you luck on getting accepted!
thank you, i really appreciate this! I hope my essays and LoR were good. I had my english teacher read over my essays and edit them for me. I know my scores weren’t as high as they should have been but I didn’t study for them at all like I should have. I also don’t know my class rank, my school doesn’t tell us or keep track of it- i go to a small private school.
When will you know? You applied ED? My daughter might apply RD, but it’s a reach, OOS so only 18% admitted.
We will be notified late January, for ED.
Yes, we are supposed to know by the end of this month. I was hoping that i could have found out sooner, like i did for a few of the other colleges I applied to, but unfortunately i don’t see that happening.
Honestly, you look on the bubble to me due to lower test scores. I hope you get in. Will you post back and let us know how it turns out?
I’m so nervous!
I got accepted!
did you get in
