Do I have any chance?

Hey everyone!

So, I’m a CCC student, trying to apply for CSU’s for this upcoming spring. I plan on majoring in either Communications or History. I finished my general ed requirements last semester, and plan to finish the rest of my requirements this summer and fall. Unfortunately, I skipped a year of school (I struggle with Depression, things went south for a bit and I ended up dropping that semester and missed another semester as well). Sadly, I have a 2.4 GPA. I don’t plan to apply to any of the UC’s. But I do plan to apply to the following CSU’s:

Chico, CSUN, Sac State, Humboldt, SFSU, Sonoma, Stainslaus, San Marcos, Channel Islands, Bakersfield, San Bernardino, LA, Monterrey Bay, and Dominguez Hills. Do I have any chance of getting into any of these schools? I realize I have a little bit of time to raise my GPA and I plan to. I just don’t know if I’ll get into any of these places, especially with how Impaction is these days.

Thanks for reading :).

I think you’ll get into about half of them - SF, Humboldt, Channel Islands, Bakersfield DH and Monterrey are all pretty likely to accept you but, a few of them are now impacted so, the threshold may be higher next year. With a 2.4, apply broadly and be sure to include a Local campus.
Good luck

Ncal- CSUN is my local campus, are the other ones rather difficult to get into because of my GPA or because of Impaction, or both?

If you’re a CA resident, you’re set up for a bit more success by being in-state, but Communications is incredibly competitive. You’re probably better off with History (I know someone at Humboldt State as a history major, and he adores it) because it’s less competitive, but the prerequisites vary. If you get good grades in your major prep classes and find some way to re-do or improve upon your previous grades, you should have a good shot at some less competitive CSUs. You can always explain what you went through in your essays, and I think as long as you approach it from an optimistic outlook and reflect what you learned and how you’ve grown, the admissions readers will understand and take that into consideration when looking at your grades. Best of luck!!

Aspiring- I am a California resident. I’ve heard that it is, but I’ve also heard that it depends on the school as well. That’s the plan :). I thought for transfer students, Essays were not required but if they are I will make sure to do that as best as I can. Honestly, I love both subjects and wouldn’t mind majoring and minoring in one or the other.

The CSU application does not have essays. If you are local to CSUN, you have priority which should help your chances but not a guarantee.

I am also a CA resident applying for transfer, and both the UCs and Common App have essays. I don’t know about CSUs, because they didn’t have them when I was a freshman applicant, but maybe since you’re a transfer they want that component. I’m not an expert since I don’t plan on applying to many CSUs, so let me know if you find out essays are in the app!

Gumby- I thought so. I am a local to CSUN (live in the San Fernando Valley area). I know, and that’s fine. I’m just happy to get accepted anywhere to be honest with you.

Aspiring- Ah okay! I will. I don’t think there are but who knows, right?

Thank you Gumby. Looks like I’ve met the IGETC requirements, just need to finish the major work and pray I get in at this point lol.

Best of luck.

Thank you

impaction means they have more applicants than they have seats. As a result, they raise the admission standards to accept the most qualified applicants. Your GPA probably won’t meet the threshold for Chico and the others I suggested are unlikely to accept you.

Do your best and keep your options open.

Right, I read that on the CSU mentor page. I will, thank you :).
