I plan on applying ED at johns hopkins as it is a dream school to me:
-I am Hispanic; first generation American; and go to a grade deflating hs in which i have received a 3.2-3.3/ 4.0
-I have played football and golf and am a member of the minority culture club.
-My SATs were 1920 but that should be highly improved by next year.
-I have taken a majority of my school's honors and ap courses and have done fairly well with them.
-I will have great teacher and counselor recommendations and have done well over 100 hours of community service throughout my HS time.

I have faced much adversity in my life and my essays reflect that....what do you think my odds are here.
If it helps I am planning to apply for an English or philosophy major.
Very nervous so please tell me what you think!

I think you have a lot of things going for you—URM hook helps, and if they understand that your school deflates grades then the lower GPA will be given more consideration. Your SAT scores are a little low, but since JHU is very holistic about the application process, I wouldn’t kill myself over it. (Give ACT a try?) Good luck!

3.4-3.6 is “grade deflation” for a top student. 3.2…
not so much, esp. with that SAT.
JHU is quite improbable for you, I’m sorry to say. But I would def. apply. if you really want to go there. I don’t think your stats will necessarily get you thrown out of consideration wish you the best of luck!

How do you group the concept of minority into a single cultural club? Do you, as a club, celebrate the individual cultures of various minority groups, or do you do some conglomerated mix-up of culture? On second thought, isn’t that just what America is?

Dude, pull those SATs up a bit, try the ACTs, if your rank is solid, you’ll have an excellent shot. The official stance is that there is no benefit applying to certain majors; but my ex-roommate was not hesitant to inform me that he got in solely because he declared Classics on the application (with years and years of Latin)… only to go IR…

i’m not sure how you’d get into any highly competitive school with a 3.2-3.3 unless maybe you had a massive upward trend and/or the other parts of your application were stellar. also, at the very least, you need to bump up that SAT score into the middle 50% range imo (so around 2050 +/- 30 at min).

i would put tons of effort into getting as high an ACT or SAT as possible. that may give you the push you need to get in… otherwise it’ll be tough getting in even ED.

and did you take any AP tests? perhaps great performances on them may help ease any fears the low gpa creates. that’s just speculation though. i have no idea if AP tests can help you out.

well from my school a large amount of kids get into top 25 schools being “average” students with Caucasian backgrounds. my essay and overall application have been pretty well written and my recs are also very strong. my “downfall” came during my middle years but due to hardships and whatnot. i think my top two schools at this point are hop and emory
