<p>Hi, im supposed to hear from admissions in less than a week through the football coaches at Amherst. The coaches have assured me that with my scores there should be no problems with getting me in, and that they dont feel the need to use an athletic slot on me because of my scores, theyll merely support my app. With these type of scores and a strong backing from a team, do I have any reason to think i may be denied?</p>
<p>SAT: R:750 M:740 W:710 (only took the test once if that matters)
SAT II: 800 chemistry, 720 Math 1, 690 Bio
GPA: 98.47 weighted, top 5% of class
Ap scores: Chem 5, English Language: 5
senior schedule: Ap gov, ap lit, ap physics, ap calc ab, ap eco, span honors
ECs: varsity football(captain, all county, and academic “golden eleven” for county) varsity basketball, varsity lacrosse, 2 years of research, won an award, summer research at Stony brook university and one summer volunteering for american diabetes association. A couple of clubs and honors societys, mostly athletics and science tho.</p>
<p>Essays: one problem i forsee is that wen i applied to amherst the harvard coach seemed to be in love with me and i also didnt kno much about amherst, so i recycled my harvard supplement and didnt really put too much thought into it. </p>
<p>i know i probably shouldnt worry, but i didnt apply to any real safety schools, I love Amherst after visitng it, and if i dont get in im screwed. Thank you very much.</p>

<p>I’m in the same boat man! Except my resume is significantly weaker (lower GPA + only all conf 2 years and not captain or anything). Amherst appears to have lost interest in me but I sent my stuff to the Bowdoin Middlebury and Carleton coaches and they’re consulting admissions… I think that their backing (not slotting) helps significantly and here’s why. There is probably a mass of candidates with similar statistics to you and all it takes is a little shove to push you over the top. I wouldn’t worry if I were you, but if you don’t mind can you post when you find out?</p>
<p>Abstract, you have probably fallen into what is known as the “protected” category as opposed to the “tipped” category in NESCAC parlance. “Tips” (what you are calling a “slot”) are doled out to to put an athlete over the line whose credentials otherwise fall a little short for admission (A band tip), a bit more short (B band tip), and quite a bit short (C band tip). “Protected” means, all other things being equal, the athlete is to be admitted over the non-athlete. In other words, if there a bunch of applicants whose qualifications are similar to yours, you would be admitted over them. Based on your grades and scores, you’re fully qualified for admission so the “protect” is probably being used to let the admissions office that the fball coach does indeed want you.</p>

<p>update, i do have something to worry about as does everyone else. my application is going “to commitee” and will be reviewed in march. basically im on the edge of acceptance/rejection. for a football player with my scores this is very rare, the coach claims it is due to the 8600 aplications recieved this year. good luck to everyone</p>
<p>Wow. If you’re only borderline, then I have absolutely no shot. Eh. I’ve pretty much given up on being accepted here anyway. Good luck abstract - despite the fact that you’re going to committee, I would feel confident if I were you.</p>

<p>Abstract - I would guess that they did not support you as much as they implied they would. Perhaps it was a numbers game - you got to Amherst too late in the process and they had already filled their needs at your position through earlier commitments. You may still get in because you credentials are good but it will probably not have too much to do with your football talents . .</p>
<p>Yeah, from what I understand coaches have less influence in regular decision. That makes sense since there’s no committment to attend from the athlete then. There isn’t much use in granting favors to an applicant that may well go elsewhere. You have terrific grads/scores/talents etc. I imagine you may well get accepted, but even if not you’ll have other outstanding opportunities at other schools.</p>
<p>thank you, i told the coaches that if accepted i would apply, i really mismanaged my whole college application/recruiting process but based on how much interest i was getting at the time i had every reason to be confident. on the brightside if my future child goes through this process i will know exactly what to believe and how to handle this</p>
