Do I have to attend a college once I pay the deposit?

So I've been accepted to a good college, and I'm sure I want to go there. However, I'm on the waiting list for another university that I would prefer over the 1st college, but the university won't get back to me on the final decision until much later. If I am rejected from the wait list, by then, I will have lost my place at the 1st college unless I pay the deposit by the deadline. So I may lose my place at both schools. So is it acceptable for me to pay the deposit to the college and not attend if I am accepted to the university?

You don’t have to go, but they keep your deposit.

The way to look at it is like an engagement. You should only be engaged to one person (college) at a time, but you are free to break it off at any time if a better offer should come along. But you would lose your deposit.

Yep, you can pay the deposit and not go, but some deposits are not refundable, especially after May 1st, so you have to decide if you want to risk losing whatever the deposit is, or risk losing your place at both schools, or just pay the deposit and go there.

I would put the deposit in and see what happens at the other school. If you get off the waitlist, then go there, and so, what, you lose the deposit, which is what, like $200, but then you could go to the school you really wanna go to? I wouldn’t worry that much about losing a $200 deposit.
