do i need a printer in my room?

yes! my printer broke halfway through the year, and it sucked.

there are printers all around ucsd though. be sure to open up a printing account on the acs website. it's really cheap. then, you can print at computer labs. also, "imprints", the copy & print centers at ucsd, offer printing services. Just us one of the open computers and press print, they'll get your printouts for you, you pay and you're good to go.

what about getting sharing a laser printer with the roommates/suitemates?

In Windows XP, I know you can network a connected printer to your computer. So you can install the drivers on your computer, and share it on the network. And if your computer isn't connected, there really can't be a way for them to use it. (Well...they could download the drivers themselves through the website...) Yeah, tough one. Best way would be to talk it out.

Options:
1. Get your own printer, and don't mooch other people's printer. It's a hassle to share.

Go to the library, get a printer account, and print at the library. Entirely do-able, and may even be more hassle-free than having your own printer, as long as you're willing to walk to a computer station (i.e. CLICS is convenient). You don't have to worry about restocking ink or paper.

You can't network a printer on campus, not unless you hook up your own router or something, and even then, I'm not sure you can do it. Limitations.
