As with most things you’ll be packing, it’s really dependent on personal preference. I had a printer my first year and only used it once or twice.

VUprint is a program that allows you to download a universal driver for all of the printer stations on campus. Because I usually study in libraries and student centers, I find myself using these print stations in lieu of walking back to my room to print articles/papers. Printing is relatively cheap on campus. If you take the cash you’d spend on a printer/ink/paper and place it in your commodore cash account instead, you’ll have ample funds to print via VUprint for the entire academic year.

As for the laptop lock, I’d advise against it. Although I have heard of theft occurring on campus, I’ve always felt completely comfortable leaving my computer in a carrell or in Rand/Commons Center when going to buy a soda or use the restroom. The only students I’ve seen using laptop locks are graduate students who attended different universities for their undergraduate degrees.

It’s not a bad idea. They are pretty cheap nowadays and it’s a nice convenience. Certainly isn’t necessary, but very convenient. There are printers in the Commons Center and many other places around campus where you can print for 5cents a page. Probably cheaper than buying a printer+ink refills, but saves you from running to a printer the morning a paper is due or at 2am when you need to print some study materials.

I’ve never seen anyone with a laptop lock. Theft is VERY rare. Just lock the door to your room when you aren’t there, and don’t leave the laptop unattended in public! If you need to leave if for a moment, ask someone nearby to keep an eye on it.

EDIT: nice timing on the above poster, 5 seconds before my post!
