Do i need to take summer classes for remedial math?

So today i took the SOAR test at my high school. In case you dont know, the SOAR test is a placement test for the community college district i will be attending, covering English and 4 levels of math which you can pick, so the English test is all the same for everyone, but you can pick your math test from 4 levels of increasing difficulty. I chose the math Level 2 test: Algebra. Now, math has always been my worst subject, i hate all math basically, and it hates me. Math has been the only class ive had to go to Summer School and Credit Recovery for in High School, but now i wish i tried harder in my past years. Anyways, im pretty sure i totally bombed the math test, a lot i had forgotten how to solve since i havent had math in a year, and i didnt even finish half of it, the test it timed: 50 questions in 60 minutes. Im really ashamed of how dumb i am in math, how i couldn't even handle Algebra 1. Now im sure they will either automatically drop me in Math 10 for my first year and i have to work to Math 100 somehow... They said if we do bad on one of the tests, theyll call us and make us retake the test at the community college, so that might happen, hope not, but if it does, im gonna have to take the Math Level 1 test... so embarrassing. Thing is, i dont know if i have to take classes for math during the summer since ill be so far below. Will I? Were you in a similar situation? How did it turn out?
Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I don’t know exactly how it works in your area, but at my community college you were allowed to retake the placement test. If this is possible for you, I would recommend that you study REALLY HARD before taking the placement test again. When I took the placement test the first time, I tested into pre-algebra or something, but when I retook it, I placed into intermediate algebra (which was still remedial) and I did take that over the summer. Then in the fall I was able to take my transferable math class and was all on track. I too have a lot of trouble with math, so it was a really hard summer for me, but I was glad I got it done. I think it’s worth getting it done as soon as possible, because once you’re done, you don’t have to worry about it again! (Assuming you don’t plan on majoring in something math-heavy).

I can’t really tell what will happen in your situation, but I hope this helped! Good luck!

@kat121 How did you study? I dont even have a math class this year, so i dont even have access to any kind of math book. So how did you study for the algebra test? I know i can easily pass the Level 1 test which i believe is pre-algebra, but thats pretty low.

Khan Academy! I also had a book called Algebra Again or something like that, which I used a lot. Your community college probably has practice tests-- you should get those and work on the problems in them. You can get books at your local library, probably, and Khan Academy is free. I had a lot of help from my dad too, so if you can get someone good at math to help you, that’s probably a good idea!

Khan is good. I used a site called PatrickJMT when I had to review Calc 2 to help my son pass the class and it was excellent.

+1 for PatrickJMT. Pretty darn helpful.

I found a sample of the math test i took… and failed. Straight to the pdf of it.

Link to page right before. Not a pdf. Click the “Sample Math Test #2” link on the page, it takes you to the pdf.

So the test is officially considered “ELEMENTARY ALGEBRA” and im on Khan Academy trying to find the correct Algebra material to study, but im not sure what it would be considered on Khan. I believe it would be considered Algebra 1? But maybe its “Arithmetic and pre-algebra,” or possibly even Algebra 2 at all?
Just want to make sure, dont want to accidentally study the wrong stuff, then fail again on the test xD

Edit: Looking back on the practice test, it seems so much easier, but a lot of the stuff on the test isnt even on here. And theres at least 4 questions i dont know how to solve on this practice test, so thats already missing 40% of just the practice test T_T

Go to PatrickJMT. It has a list of topics under the heading algebra, calculus, trig, etc.
