Do I need to take the ACT with writing for admission to W&M?

I already took the SAT a few times but have not yet taken the ACT. I need to sign up for the 9/11 ACT soon before late registration ends. Do I need to sign up for the writing portion? I am applying ED to W&M.

It’s not definitive, but the Collegeboard profile says “If submitting ACT, the writing section is optional” : [College Search - College of William and Mary - W&M - Admission](<a href=“College Search - BigFuture | College Board”>College Search - BigFuture | College Board)

Hopefully “W&M Admission” will weigh in here, otherwise just give them a call or an email - but I’m pretty sure it’s optional.

I think “Writing” tests are generally viewed as unreliable, and are widely ignored in admissions decisions. I think most schools will only look at the Composite Score - but in any case, you should look at the requirements for your RD schools list, to see if any of them require the writing section, just in case the ED doesn’t work out…

Good luck!

W&M does not require the ACT with writing and does not see the writing score if submitted. With the SAT we see the writing score as it’s a mandatory part of the exam but we focus our review on the critical reading and math.
