do i need to take the toefl/ielts

I am an international student applying ED to Cornell CoE (Undergraduate) this fall and I wanted to know if I am required to take the TOEFL or the IELTS English exam. English is my first language and I attended an English-speaking school in a non-English speaking country.

Cornell’s site says:

TOEFL and IELTS Testing Requirements

International freshman and transfer applicants for whom English is not the first language must submit a TOEFL or IELTS score.The TOEFL and/or IELTS requirement for international applicants is waived for students achieving a score of at least 670 on the Critical Reading section of the SAT exam OR for students who have studied for at least four years in the U.S. or other nations where English is an official language. Please note that Cornell does NOT waive the TOEFL/IELTS test requirement for students who have attended an English-speaking school in a non-English speaking country.

I took the ACT instead…

Cornell’s website seems to indicate that you do need to take it. However, IME, the directions/recommendations on any website cover most contingencies, but not all. I’d suggest contacting Cornell directly and speaking with someone familiar with international applicants for advice. Although the website says that they do not waive, in your case, it does not seem like you should need to take TOEFL, IMO. But then, I don’t work for Cornell. :slight_smile: Ask; the worst they can say is that you need to take it. Good luck.

@skieurope thank you :slight_smile:
