I came to the US in 2001 so chinese is my first language and I speak it at home. However, I've been a resident here for 12 years, I've been going to school here, and I'm fluent in English. I'm currently a junior and I just heard about the TOEFL test and I'm really confused about it. Do I need to take this test to apply for some colleges?

And does anyone know if the TOEFL is required for Upenn if english wasn't my first language?
Thanks!

If you’re an American citizen, you must take the SAT. If you’re still considered a foreigner you can take the toefl, but since you’ve been here for so long I would just suggest you take the sat.

Each college and university sets its own policy about this, and yes there are places that require US citizens who have a different home language to take the TOEFL even if their entire education has been in the US in schools where English is the language of instruction. Not many, but they are out there.

Read the information at each college and university website to find out what the requirements are for the TOEFL or other tests of English proficiency. Most places will not require it because you have been in school in the US for X years. But do not be surprised if you learn that some place requires an English proficiency exam.
