Do I really have no chance at Emory?

Sorry for the strong title but I am kind of worried about getting in. I have 1400 on the SAT, which is not even in the 25-75 range. My GPA will end up with 3.71 due to illness (will explain through counselors and additional info) Before senior year my gpa is 3.85, unweighted. My activity is pretty good according to the other people and my essays are average I think. Do I have a chance at Emory? I am kind of aiming for oxford now. Do you think I will get into oxford with my stat?

Really not sure what you are talking about…

Here is the common data set for Emory 2015-2016. You are well in the 45-55th range. Do you perhaps mean 1400 on the old SAT? (Which I do not believe you mean).

@Rinora I looked at their website. http://apply.emory.edu/discover/fastfacts.php. They might be little higher since it only lists the scores and gpa of accepted students not enrolled students

@atlantatata I personally think you have a good chance as long as your essay and other elements reflect the best of you. Did you apply ED1? Or are you planning on ED2 or RD?

@Rinora I am applying to RD since my top college is not emory. Emory is my second

@atlantata Out of curiosity, what is your first choice school?

@atlantata: huh? The bottom quartile adds to a 1330 even for admits! My guess is that you have another school in mind and are projecting those numbers onto Emory for some reason.

@bernie12 Their website says 2030-2270 SAT and 31-34 ACT 25-75 percentile. 2030 is about 1430 on the new SAT.

@BiffBrown ehhh I can’t tell u specifically but it is ranked 15 in us news

@atlantata Where did you get your conversion of old SAT to new SAT scores?

I estimate a 2030 on the old SAT to equal 1353 on the new SAT.

A 2270 equals 1513.

@biffbrown did you use proportion to calculate the score? It doesnt work like that since new sat is a bit easier than the old.

@atlantata I used proportions to translate from old to new. Where did you find a conversion table?

Other than if it is Rice, don’t know why you would also be interested in Emory. That is basically the only school with a remotely similar vibe to Emory. The others are completely different.

@bernie12 It’s not Vanderbilt. And the schools don’t necessarily have to be similar to be in my interest.

@atlantatata: I am always a little wary of those who apply to say, a D-3 school who view a dramatically different D-1 school as a top choice. I worry that they may end up not fitting or disappointed like that undergrad20 person. They desired something else to begin with (how they envision traditional college life does not vibe well with many D-3 schools) and “settled” for say Emory because it was highly ranked. That scenario is foreseeable for some and is uncomfortable to see unfold. Wouldn’t go that route unless I see the drastically different school as both an academic and am open to it being a potential social fit, but I suppose it matters less if academic fit (to me this is different from rank) is a higher priority. I’m just always a little bit cynical because that cluster ranked at 15 have FAR more in common with each other (except maybe Rice as I said) than they do with somewhere like Emory.

As for SAT scores…don’t understand why they would convert a 3 part score directly to a 2 part score. I would only pay attention to the 2 part score. I suppose then at that point, if Emory’s bottom quartile is say 1390-1400 for admits (my prediction) for the new SAT, then you are in the IQR. Also, Emory isn’t a particularly stats sensitive school. Again, it is quite a bit below even its nearest peers (in terms of incoming stats). It’s yield power (lower) and its admissions practices are a bit different from elsewhere.

Don’t know how new SAT works, I guess it adds that additional section out of 40? Regardless…I think your chance is as good as anyone else.

You should be a target for Emory, and I think you have a very strong shot at Oxford. Just kill the essays (there’s been a growing importance on them lately as Emory wants a certain student body) and you’ll be fine. Good luck.

.

I got into both campuses with a 1420, you have a chance
