I took the October SAT and ACT.
SAT: 2370
CR: 800
M: 770
W: 800
E: 10

ACT: 36
E: 36
M: 36
R: 36
S: 36
W: 9 for E/W: 33
The writing score for the ACT just went in today. Writing excluded, I would send my ACT scores no question, but since my SAT is fine already I don't think I exactly need it. I don't want to "waste" my 36, though, so as long as the E/W score won't hurt me in the eyes of colleges I think I want to send it. Does anybody know? Will this show a weakness in writing or is it fine?

Definitely send it. 9 is not a terrible mark. Plus, the achievement of a 36 on all four sections will benefit you more than the 9 will hurt you. Your 36 is really impressive don’t let it go to waste.

Okay, but will the 36 “help” me when I have already sent my SAT? I can accept that my score on the other four ACT sections could outweigh a 9 on the essay, but does that remain relevant if my ACT score is submitted on top of my SAT? I guess what I mean is, given that I already have submitted an acceptable college entrance exam, does the 36 (with the 9 essay) “help” me at all? If so, I agree 100% with what you said. So, since I am unsure of how the 9 essay will be received by colleges, will my composite score still be a benefit given the SAT scores I have already sent off to schools?

No, sorry I’ve got nothing special. I registered for the October SAT and ACT having taken the SAT once before. I registered for the ACT before I got the 2370 report, or I probably wouldn’t have taken it at all. Since I didn’t think I really “needed” the ACT, regardless of how I did on the October SAT, I didn’t put much preparation into it. I took a handful of practice tests in the weeks leading up to test day, which I think helped me a lot with the timing. Beyond that, I just read through Sparknotes’s ACT guide to review grammar rules/figure out what math I needed to do. Only advice I can give is a generic “practice practice practice.” You can do it! :D

I remember going to an info session for a minor ivy (penn or dartmouth or something like that) and the ref emphasized so much on the fact that if you’re unsure what to send, just send them all. Because they have a formula that they use to determine what helps you and what doesn’t. They said that sending additional scores won’t hurt you (unless it’s crazy low) and can only help your chances. They said not to try and figure out which score is “higher” because how you view them might be different from what the adcom views them. So that was what my previous comment was based off of. Well, and the fact that I would choose to send my 36 without a doubt.
