"so, how old are you?
"i'm 18"
"are you in school?"
"yes, i'm a senior."
"o, are you going to college next year?"
"yes. i think so."
"really? where?"
"NY."
"NY, there are lots of colleges there, which one?"
"Cornell."
"oh wow, really?" * a look of absolute amazement to show this person does not believe i am actually in school, going to college, and will be attending cornell. *

ok, i guess i do look very unscholarly (really?)........... arghhhhhhh..... does this just happen to me???? i mean, it's prob not that big of a deal, but when you get it like every other day, when ppl just ASSUME you won't be going to college, when they are completely shock U could possibly get into cornell (we're not even talking about harvard here, i mean, come on)...

i think i'm getting pretty tired of this type of conversation. any suggestions, or do i just keep up w/ my happy face?

I think this situation is preferential to the one posted elsewhere, where future Cornellians were receiving rude remarks about the school and their friends were trying to act as if Cornell is nothing to be impressed by.

I think this might come out of respect for the school? It seems like acknowledgment that Cornell is amazing and that you must be very smart to have gotten in! Look at it positively. :]

""oh wow, really?" * a look of absolute amazement to show this person does not believe i am actually in school, going to college, and will be attending cornell. *"

This equals to: "NOOOO! it's not possible! I'm not in, so how can he be in??"
People just can't stand seeing others doing better than them. You do NOT look stupid, or anything like that. Just do not pay attention. Oh, and yes - once you are in Cornell - send them a little nice postcard.. Greetings from Ithaca & Cornell ;););) I'm sure they'll appreciate.

Lol, I try the same thing when someone asks me where I'm going to college; i say 'new york' and try to escape before they rephrase the question to ask which college.

Kids didn't believe me when I owned up the PSAT 'cos I never deliberately showcase my abilities. I get my (good) marks, write my (great) essays, and keep them to myself (mostly.)

this discussion topic is a little dumb in itself. all of you are not stupid, in fact you are very intelligent- you got in to cornell university. why does it matter what people think of you? at the end of the day you are a cornell student or soon to be cornell student and the way you "look" doesn't depict your intelligence.

actually, i would say looking stupid when you're actually really intelligent is a tremendous asset because then people always underestimate you and when you prove them wrong you can shove it in their faces.

i, however, am Asian, so i dunno how I'm ever going to be wrongly stereotyped.

thanx guys. it doens't seem like a big deal now that i'm getting into the i-am-so-ready-for-college mode. i guess i've been living my life way to similar to juxtaposn that i give ppl the appearance that i don't know much. and then there's that stupid stereotype about the inverse relationship betwn intelligence and appearance... that should really be wiped out.

To VectorWega: yeah, that's how i felt a while back too... but no longer. thanx for the input anyway, it is always nice to hear from a college grad from Texas Tech, because you should be more mature and of course not as stupid as i am currently.

i do agree with the person who pointed out this post is dumb in itself and shouldn't have appeared in the first place. lol
