Do I stand a chance against kids who have great grades and SAT scores.

I have never been the best grades wise. I have never failed a class but I have gotten C’s before; mostly B’s or A’s, however. I’m a junior in high school and I will be the senior class vice president, I have a credible blog, and I will be starting an internship at my dad’s job this summer. I also have a lot of community service. If I have a lot of leadership roles/extracurricular activities, etc, but my grades/SAT scores are not the best: do I have a shot at schools such as UT Austin or Texas A&M?

What are your SAT scores and GPA? At any rate, if colleges only admitted 4.0/2400/36 students, there would be a lot less college students than there are. Congratulations on your accomplishments.

Coming from my experience with college admissions and hearing from people around me- the bottom line for any admission really comes down to the GPAs and SAT scores. The extracurriculars are secondary. I can’t really tell if you have a chance or not because I don’t know what your “not the best” scores are.

Sounds like u spend too much time doing the fun stuff and not enough time doing the serious stuff.

@GMTplus7, some people don’t find their focus as soon as others. At least the OP isn’t being ridiculous and asking for chances to HYSPM.

The mid-50% range for incoming freshmen at UT Austin was 1750-2070, average 1901. For OOS students, the (I think) average SAT was 2000. That means that they do admit lower as well as higher. Are you in-state?

The avg. SAT score for incoming freshmen is 1220 (CR+M) at Texas A&M.

There are approximately 2500 fully accredited undergraduate institutions in the US. CC participants inordinately focus (I’m just as guilty as others) on the top one hundred (or so), however, there are many hundreds that are entirely reputable, that will prepare you fully for a lengthy and successful personal and professional life, to which you can be admitted. “Bragging rights aside,” degree from these universities and LACs forecloses very few opportunities.

Yes, I am in state. I took my first SAT this past December and it was no where near what I was expecting (1800). I have worked really hard these past three years, and there’s a trend in my grades showing that I have improved in all my classes since Freshman year. However, I’m worried that’s not enough.

@Meghancollege, that still doesn’t answer the question of what exactly your stats are. You could contact someone in admissions and see what they predict.

Are you looking for financial/merit aid or are your parents able to pay?
