If you’re going for Medill, you need to show in some way that you’ve accomplished something in journalism. Have you done projects? Freelanced?

It’s hard to chance you without knowing how your GPA converts to the American system and without your test scores. How do you stand in your class? Have you done practice tests? That said, Medill does want to increase its international reputation and that comes with accepting more internationals.

About 40 (~10/class) international students/per class got FA (need-based) according to 2008-09 common data set. It doesn’t say how many internationals applied for FA. Average amount awarded = $37,806

brebeuff, about needing to show that you’ve accomplished something in journalism for Medill- although it probably helps a lot, it’s not always needed. I just got in ED to Medill and have accomplsished nothing so far in journalism. I think that for Medill, they put added importance on your essays (just my opinion)- so make sure those are top-notch.

I’ve done a short magazine as a project. I was thinking of sending it with my application, but it’s in Swedish so they can’t read it. The only thing I have to show for it is the layout. Which I’m pretty proud about though, do you think there is an idea to send it? I’ve also done some magazine-frontpages on my own…

While most kids starting at Medill have journalism ECs to present (often very extensive) many have none.

Solid academic credentials can easily overcome a weak or even non-existent writing portfolio. I’d agree with bosoxandnova8 that good application essays will help one’s prospects, but grades/standardized test scores still reign supreme among adcoms.

I’d send in the magazine project along with a brief explanation, humorous or otherwise. Sure to draw attention from a committee used to the same old same old. Might even make their day. Doubt many Swedish magazines arrive in their mailboxes.
