I know 5 languages.By knowing I mean that I speak four of them fluently. I’m from Romania so I know romanian, german ( I have the German Language Certificate of the education ministers conference, deutsches sprachdiplom short) Spanish and I know level B1 japanese. I’m only a freshmen in highschool and I have a lot of extracurricular activities done already and I’m involved in a lot of projects and associations(Red Cross, Interact, etc)I want to get into Columbia do I have a chance?
(I’m not talking about the SAT exams because I haven’t taken them as I’m currently studying for those as well as the IELTS.)
Speaking four languages is impressive but without grades and test scores it is impossible to chance you.
Of course I know that but taking into consideration that I have started studying from ninth grade I think I will be able to score highly(SAT). In my country there are 17 classes and I am a straight A student besides two of those and I’m planning to improve those two aswell ( oh how much I hate math and physics) .
With very high SATs, of course you have A CHANCE… just keep in mind that for an international student trying to get into any of the elite schools is like playing a lottery. That chance is small. (Unless your father is a king or a prime minister or multi billionaire… that always helps a great deal )
The languages are definitely interesting, but even with high SAT scores, chances for internationals are small. I am an international myself (half Romanian, btw), and I speak 5 languages fluently, and 2 others with a pretty good level. Got a mediocre-high SAT for an international, pretty good ECs and LoRs, and got rejected by most of my schools.
From what I hear from my Romanian friends who want to apply to the US, the pool of applicants is dominated by the top schools in Bucharest (mostly ICHB, Sava, Vianu), because top US unis know these schools. As most Romanians require financial aid, this is also a problem, since Columbia is need-aware for internationals.
You’re a freshman (9th grade I suppose), so you still have time. I started researching in the middle of 11th grade…
