Received a D in AP Chemistry. 730 on the SAT II...
I don't know where to explain this but, my situation is that during Junior year, in addition to the stress of all activities being alone for most of the time after my mother lost her job, I lost a very close relative that I had a close relationship with (Aunt) and was really devastated because I had been contacting her and visiting her since I was younger...Guidance counselor will be writing about this in her letter to colleges I'm applying to...other than that here are the stats

Opinions+suggestions?

Thanks!

Would I have a any chance with early decision? Really want to go to Hopkins

I know predictions won't be accurate but I would still appreciate input and "chances"

Thank you and don't be too overly harsh :)

Are there any other very competitive schools similar to Hopkins I would have a better chance at if you think I have no chance here?

I’m also a senior applying to Hopkins. I was wondering if you knew that you could get rid of that D in AP Chem if you talked to your counselor and had your mom write a note? Of course you still stand a chance. In terms of what I’ve seen being accepted into Hopkins they look at the holistic person and you sound very well rounded. Good luck and I hope we will be seeing each other at Hopkins. By the way, amazing SAT. :)

What is salone4u talking about? A mom’s note doesn’t undo bad grades. You have a shot, of course. But that D will be a part of your transcript. I had a bad grade on mine and still got in, it happens, but the D will be there.

You posted on this very same topic a few weeks ago. The response has and always will be the same- Yes, you have a chance. Yes, a D does not look good. No, I cannot tell you if you will get in or not. The admissions committee will look at everything and make their decisions. There’s no need to worry, as it is out of your hands. Focus on doing the best you can first semester of senior year, because that is the most important semester of your high school career (at least for JHU admissions). Good luck.

I’m in America…Virginia specifically…my cousin got her Spanish grade removed…and my GC discussed with me getting mine removed for math, but I never did it cuz I had an A.

Hey what can you do…I think its only for one grade under certain circumstances, but my cousin got it removed because it was a D. Her GC just did it for her. I agree it is unfair to the other students.

Well, I hope you get in since it’ll be a sign that I could too. I had the same problem with calculus this past spring because I had an awful time with a midterm while I was recovering from bronchitis and running on two hours sleep (at best) from taking care of my family and post-transplant mother.

Would a recommendation from the Chairman or Vice Chairman of Yale Genetics Department boost my chances of getting into Hopkins? (Did research for him during the summer)
