Would this Rec. letter boost my chances? (Chance me as well?)

Do I stand any chance?
Received a D in AP Chemistry. 730 on the SAT II...
I don't know where to explain this but, my situation is that during Junior year, in addition to the stress of all activities being alone for most of the time after my mother lost her job, I lost a very close relative that I had a close relationship with (Aunt) and was really devastated because I had been contacting her and visiting her since I was younger...Guidance counselor will be writing about this in her letter to colleges I'm applying to...other than that here are the stats

Receiving a letter of reccomendation from the Chairman or Vice Chairman of the Yale Genetics department and am wondering if this will have any noticeable effect on my chances.

Opinions+suggestions?

Thanks!

Would I have a any chance with early decision? Really want to go to Hopkins

I know predictions won't be accurate but I would still appreciate input and "chances"

Thank you and don't be too overly harsh

What are you opinions on my chances at:
Tufts
Wake Forest
Boston College
Carnegie Mellon

Any opinions out there?

You seem to have good depth in your E.C.s’
Your standardized test scores are average for those schools
Your schedule is rigorous, but your GPA is a little low.

I think Wake Forest would be a decent match but B.C. and Tufts in my experience are a little bit harder to get into at least where i am from.

Thanks do you think I would still have a decent chance at these considering the circumstance I was in?

Any other opinions?

Any chance of rejection from all of them if I applied to all of them?

you should get into at least one of them, but still i’d apply to your state school just in case

Sorry, but a lot of people lose relatives, and while it is devastating, it rarely excuses a D grade. The Yale rec would probably help a lot at - Yale. At other places, it’s going to help but not nearly as much.

You should get into Wake Forest and Boston College. The other two will be significantly harder.

Your SAT is really all you can do at this point to help your app, so if you think you can get >2200 you should retake, or take the ACT if you think you can get 33+.

Thanks for the replies. Are you saying that if I applied to Yale it would help alot? What would my chances be with the letter?

Any other opinions?
