please tell me how well i need to do in my junior and senior year and ACTs
if i even want a chance at UofM

3.5 is too low to get into umich. you need to pull of a very strong junior year and shoot for a 31+ on the ACT to have a realistic shot at admission.

ok bearcats i really don’t want to get into a long discussion that usually happens on these threads with you
I get it, students from certain top schools would easily be able to get into to umich with a 3.5…
but OP did not mention anything about the school being super prestigious… that is why I said what I did.

it’s not just top privates, even the non prestigious but competitive public schools like stuyvesant or thomas jefferson high gets their kids in with GPAs around the 3.5 mark. So you need to know how competitive OP’s high school is before you can make that judgement.

I am just saying you cant say OP’s “3.5 is too low to get into umich.” because it might not be the case. Chances are, it’s most likely a reach, does not mean it cant be done, especially if the high school is somewhat competitive.

OP, to my knowledge, band will NOT count in your Mich GPA, so don’t count on it. However, if you are a particularly gifted musician with a lot of regional and state performance or ensemble involvement, that CAN add a dimension to your app so be sure to talk about it if that is the case.
As bearcats said, there’s been anecdotal evidence that a 3.5ish student in state might get in (if reccs are stellar and essays fab and application is EARLY). The odds increase if you are from a well-regarded school and demonstrate correspondingly high achievement scores in ACT/SAT. An upward GPA trend also helps. Class rank plays a role too. Eg. what have you done with the opportunities available to you, compared to your peers…that kind of thing. So evaluate yourself in that context as well and point out areas where you stand out.
Hope that helps. Good luck.
Cheers, K

PS Re: band. If in fact you intend to apply to music, it’s a whole other kettle of fish…for performance stream conservatory they often accept slightly lower GPAs b/c they realize that performance students focus intensly in an area. The minimum to be allowed to audition/academic clearance for School of Music is 3.0 UM unweighted. However, the average admitted is again higher.

FWIW-DS applied early and was originally deferred but then accepted (very late in the process) with an overall GPA of 3.4-3.5 depending what classes you count. He had a 32 ACT (30-34 on subsections) and 2130 SAT. He attended a small, private school in-state that is generally well respected, but not one with a longstanding reputation that would have counted for too much. However, he did have a fair amount of extracurricular activities and leadership, took the most difficult courseload possible (7 APs between Junior and Senior year, all 4’s and 5s), and his Senior year GPA was a 3.6-3.7. He is also a double legacy.

So, keep working. It is possible, depending on what else you have to show them.

well i just got my ACT results back and i got a 31 on my first try
so i’m guessing it’ll go up
but i also heard that umich also looks at improvement
and my gpa is really bad because i completely bombed the first semester of my sophomore year so if i keep getting 4.0s which i planned my schedule for next year to be
and i’m hoping for a 33 on the ACT but my high school is not very competetive from what i know although there has been people going to harvard every year with full scholarships

The 31 should help, and there is a good chance you can bring it up. I ended up with a 3.7 and a 31, and I got in (in state). And you have a year to try to bring your GPA up a bit. All hope is not lost ;-)
