I'm applying this fall, for 2013 admission. Due to switching majors multiple times, I've accumulated 65 units, and have a GPA of 3.03. I only need 2 more classes to complete IGETC, and 6 more pre-req classes for my major (Computer Science). So that's approximately 30 more units of classes, but I will be 100% done with EVERYTHING by next spring. I know IGETC isn't really required for science/engineering majors, but I'm almost done with it anyway, might as well take those 2 classes.

I'd like to sign a TAG with UC Santa Cruz since I meet the minimum GPA requirement, and I'm sure I can bump it up a little after summer. However I'm concerned that I have a lot of units and that will void the agreement. What do you think?

You’re fine, but only 70 units will transfer to UC. The reason you shouldn’t do IGETC is so you can take GE classes at UC and lighten your course load.

Hey guys I’m doing the same thing as the OP! I plan on Tagging for UCSC for Fall 2013. Im worried that i may not be qualified to TAG though because I wont be able to finish CALC2 and on the TAG agreement for Fall 2013 they have added some changes. They are screening for major preparation in majors in biological sciences…
What does this mean/?
Il have a 3.4 when Tagging and 39 UC trans units already

So what should I do? Finish the IGETC classes or just leave them for once I transfer? And honestly I’d rather focus on my major classes, they are far more interesting.

Does TAG guarantee admission into the school? That is, if I maintain at a least a 3.0 and sign the TAG, I’m automatically in?

Just so you know, pretty much everyone who tagged UCSC last fall and got in didn’t get guaranteed their major by it, even those with 3.8+ GPA. Way more stress than it was worth.

@failure wait, how would that work then? What happens if you get admission into the school but aren’t guaranteed your major? What classes are you able to take? Do they force you into a different major?
That sounds like a terrible scenario!! :(

Well, last fall I tagged UCSC, it was my safety. When UCSC approves tag for an engineering major, it comes with a little message:

“Guaranteed admission through UC Santa Cruz TAG does not ensure admission to a Jack Baskin School of Engineering major (bioinformatics, bioengineering, computer engineering, computer science, computer science: computer game design, electrical engineering, information systems management, network and digital technology, and robotics engineering). TAG applications that indicate one of these proposed majors will be reviewed by the Baskin School of Engineering, which will contact you separately with their decision.”

Then, for normal admissions, yet again there was an acceptance letter from the school first, followed by maybe a month of waiting before any word of getting into the major or not.

It’s not that you won’t get in, just that it’s going to give you a headache, if it’s anything like it was last fall. (And yes, after all that I was finally accepted as a CS major, but will be going to Berkeley instead.)

All I’m saying is, if you have another school you’re considering, it may be more beneficial to TAG there instead, since UCSC was a real hassle last year. :)

Wow, thanks for the insightful post. I’ll definitely be looking out for that. Unfortunately I can’t get my GPA up to 3.2 by Fall, so I can’t sign the TAG with any school. UCSC only requires a 3.0, so that’s all I can sign up for.

@failure - if I may ask, what was your GPA, and why do you think you were rejected?

My GPA, at the time was a 3.8, and I had a majority of pre-reqs completed, the rest planned. As far as I can tell, they just rejected everyone from the major, unless maybe someone had a 4.0 and all the pre-reqs already completed or something. I mean, it makes sense, since the major is supposedly competitive, they want to keep as many slots as they can for general admissions, so that may have been it?

Good luck with your TAG, hopefully they don’t do the same thing they did last year. :)

Thanks. This sucks though. I mean, isn’t UCSC considered to be in the lower tier of UC’s? I thought their admissions would be more lenient. Is it safe to assume that Davis and Irvine would be signficantly more competative?

I’d like some honest feedback. Will a GPA in the range of 3.0 - 3.2 get me into any UC that isn’t Merced or Riverside? I’m really praying for Davis, Santa Cruz, and Irvine. But it seems to be unrealistic :(

You should be okay. I’d say you have a pretty good chance at most of those schools. Just, TAG for UCSC last fall was ridiculous for CS, so don’t let it stress you out. (You sound stressed out, really, don’t worry so much.)

Sorry for the late response, but thanks for the insight and reassurance, guys. It is a little stressful to be honest, but I’m doing my best to keep as calm as possible.
