I just recently had an interview at American and I think it went really well. I generally give very good interviews and have been told that I know more about the university than the admissions officer does, or it felt like they were talking to an old friend. also i have been told that i have nothing to worry about at other schools like dickinson, hobart william smith, gettysburg, and franklin marshall. But my mom thinks that I may not get in with my grades and sat scores. my gpa is a 3.0 and i have an 1890 on the sats. i have been swimming for 8 years and I have been on my high school swim team for four years, i was co-captain this year. I have a wealth of extra curricular activities and I have recently taken a leadership position in my schools mock trial club, I am currently the secretary and one of the head attorneys. I would apply to spa (school of public affairs) to study pre-law. With all this information how much of chance do I have of getting into AU with a good interview, like a great interview. How much weight do interviews have at AU?.

curious about this as well; maybe you could post this on the AU parents thread…

From what I heard interviews will push you one way or another if you’re borderline. And you are very borderline, your grades and SATs are smack in the middle of the middle 50% of last years class. If you gave a great interview, it could definately be the nudge you need to push you into accepted.

to the OP: did you apply ED? jw

no i did not, i will apply regular. thats not too good is it?

but not because its not one of my top choices, it is. but I was told that more competitive students apply to AU eraly and that I have a better chance for admittance regular. is this right?

Interviews don’t count at allthey are nonevaluative and informational in scope. See: http://www.american.edu/admissions/interviews.cfm

^^ thank you, mathmom…thought I had perused all of AU’s website; guess not…

ctswimmer – Not meaning to cause any undue anxiety but I’m curious as to who told you that you have nothing to worry about at schools like F&M, Gettysburg and Dickinson? I wouldn’t bank on an auto-admit at any of those schools with a 3.0 GPA and 1890 SATs unless you are likely to get a tip because of your swimming and/or you are a full-pay candidate. Are you seeking financial aid or are the swimming coaches at those schools interested in you as a team member?

My daughter a sophmore now in School of Public Affairs very happy there. We loved American and chose over GW. Her GPA was 3.2 ,many honors and AP courses but with "C"s. Her SAT was 1700 thats all. But, she had exceptional extra curricilars like she was our Senaotors page, YDA vice pres in our county, yearbook, Shool Board Rep etc. She was in newspapers everyday. She also was amazing at interviews and did interview with our reional Admissions Counselor who will read your application. She was very impressed with my daughter But she wanted my daughter to do ED. My daughter said she was not comfortable but had nothing to do with AU was’nt planning to do ED on any school. Long story short, I think 10000% surely if you impress the Ad Couns and you show your interest it can be in your favor regardless of ur grades. Good Luck!

ctswimmer,
I would go into any interview assuming it would have some kind of impact on admission decisions regardless of the stated school policy.

yes i am a full pay i dont need financial aid, but i am not being recruited.

Interviews are non-evluative, but I did one anyway. It’s a really good way to form a relationship with your admissions rep, she told me its a plus when she remembers peoples faces while reviewing applications. thats a huge hint, interviews definitely help.
