do meal plans rollover?

So the title is pretty self explanatory lol. I was just wondering if one doesnt use all their meal dollars (or whatever they're called) will they roll over to the next semester? thankss.

Yes, they do. You can’t use them in the summer but that isn’t a problem for most people.

^^^^ WRONG! The DCB’s rollover, but not the meals on the meal plan. (Rose Hill. I presume Lincoln Center is the same.)

Put another way, if you buy a large meal plan and don’t use all the meals, that generally means you are not eating at the cafeteria and either your schedule is askew, you don’t like the food, or you are remiss in utilizing the plan and not eating 3 meals a day. THUS, its important to adjust your meal plan to fit your schedule, eating habits and WHERE you choose to eat. (i.e. if you are going to the sandwich shops and buying a sandwich and a coke instead of the cafeteria, then those are DCB’s (like a debit card) and may be more useful for you. ) Choose wisely.

Its by semester. You can adjust your plan as your eating habits change or unfold. Are you a morning person who ALWAYS eats breakfast (one of the better meals at the cafeteria in my opinion), or are you a person who sleeps in and never eats breakfast? Dont order 3 meals a day then. Or do you always eat a hot meal at supper? Or do you prefer to eat pizza late at night? Or order a sandwich while studying? Its not hard people, you just have to think and be honest with yourself. Upper classmen can have apartments with full kitchens, and they often avoid the cafeteria completely. Others are lazy and will eat anything and just want someone else to cook and clean up so they use the cafeteria or Dagger John’s.

Meals are counted weekly, the declining balance associated with a meal plan expires at the end of the spring semester and a straight declining balance account does not expire. There is a new meal plan format in place starting next year (which counts the number of weekly meals rather than what time you can enter the caf), but it is unlikely that these rules will change. The phone number of hospitatiliy services is on the linked web page so you can always call to confirm.

Happy, that is what I said. The meals dont roll over. The straight declining balance debit account does. Perhaps you clarified that point.

Citygirl1018 has previously stated she will be an incoming LC transfer and the meal plan at LC is only a DCB plan and not the traditional meals per week type of plan offered at RH. The meal plan is only there to supplement the student’s use of the kitchen facilities in their McMahon apartment. Freshman residents are required to have $800 per semester. Commuters and upperclassmen can also have a voluntary DCB meal plan but it is not required. Not sure about transfers…on the one hand you are a first year resident, on the other you are an upperclassmen. I’m guessing you covered that with them at some point though. Balances carry over until you graduate or leave Fordham.
Wow ghostbuster, you don’t have to get so excited. I think Sandkmom covered why at LC the meals do rollover. Btw, if you look at the original post, citygirl asked about meal dollars, not meals. You can not “presume” anything about LC is the same as RH, in this example because LC does not even have meals, everything is purchased per item.

^^^^ I didnt get excited. I just corrected misinformation. I have no idea how your food service works at LC except from what I hear. OP was asking about RH I presumed because they specifically asked about meals rolling over. The title said meal plan. If OP is going to LC, then they should say so and you can answer the question for them at that point in time.

But other people read this thread besides just those of us who post here and I didnt want incorrect information out there and people buying a meal plan at RH and believing it rolls over. It doesnt. Only the declining balance cards roll over.

Thats all.

Thanks sandkmom. There are different plans and different consequences for those plans at both campuses. But we need to clarify that here for anyone else who is going to be at RH campus so they don’t make a poor decision on meal plans.

It is great that the OP got the information he or she needs on the LC campus.
To clarify RH, there are two ways to get declining balances. When you purchase a meal plan you also get a certain amount of DB. The DB assiciated with a meal plan will not be carried forward year to year. If you are a commuter or live in a dorm with a kitchen you can get a straight DB plan. This type of plan apparently does roll over for a person’s entire stay at Fordham. Ghostbuster, I think we are saying basically the same thing, but those who purchase a meal plan that has some DB should know that their balance will expire at the end of the spring semester.

Wait im so im confused. Whats the difference between a straight dcb and a meal plan? or any of the other options? On the website it says “straight” dcb account and any additional funds added to the account rollover for the entire 4 years at fordham…but meal plans are non refundable?? whats the difference?

The confusion is that it looks like the meal plans are different at the two campuses. At LC all of the dorms have kitchens so the meal plan is more or less a supplement to what people choose to cook in the dorms. You pay an amount in and get a credit at the cafeteria called a declining balance. Basically you set up an account you can draw from when you get meals. You can add to the account as necessary and it follows you during your stay at Fordham. At RH many dorms have no kitchen so those students are required to get a plan for a certain number of meals/week. With these meal plans come a small declining balance account which can be used at other food outlets on campus. Students at RH who are in a dorm with a kitchen are not forced to buy a traditional meal plan. They may choose to get a declining balance account. It sounds more confusing than it should. I have put links to the RH and LC meal plans below. If the links don’t work, just go to the fordham website, and click on the bottom choice under student affairs. Basically you only need to worry about the plan on the campus you will be at.

[Meal Plans](http://www.fordham.edu/campus_resources/campus_facilities/hospitality_services/rose_hill/meal_plans_19892.asp)

To clarify specifically for LC, they CALL it a meal plan but they only offer a declining balance plan at that campus. Yes, you can add to it and as you can see from the website, there is a discount for doing so. Your money will carry over from semester to semester until you graduate or unless you withdraw. It is nonrefundable because they won’t give you the money back if you didn’t use it all up. Sadly, I hear the problem isn’t with the meal plan but rather with the food! I recommend you start watching Food Network ASAP! :D

Haha, I agree with Sandkmom. The problem for me the past year was actually using the amount of money the school makes freshman put on the plan! I ended up using what was available as more of a grocery store- I never had to actually buy milk!

So is there items like what u would find at the grocery store basically? And so u can’t actually sit in the cafeteria and buy a meal…
