Do Medical Schools consider grades and GPA after applying?

Plan on applying this summer, but I will be finishing my undergrad around the end of Summer/Fall. So I will have like 2 classes or so that I would be taking AFTER applying to Medical school. Does MedSchool consider those grades/GPA?

Thanks!

Yes

@thumper1 So do they look at the GPA I put on the application (I assume that’s how it works? Basing it off undergrad apps) and double check grades from courses I take later down the line? Would I have to update the GPA on my application myself? Thanks.

@honcho Many applicants to MD are raising seniors when they apply in May/June. Obviously they list both courses which are completed (and have the transcript) and also the courses planned to take in the coming year. When semester/quarter ends, you can update. Before matriculation, you need to submit the final transcripts which shows all the requirements of an individual college is met.

The process to extend invite for secondary or interview is based on what you have submitted and provided in May/June and AMCAS verifies the grade and courses mentioned versus the official transcripts sent by your colleges you have attended.

Ah I see, thank you both for clarifying

You cannot update your application once it has been submitted to AMCAS. Whatever your undergrad Gpa is at th time of submission is what med school use when reviewing and screening your application.

if you want to update schools of summer/fall grades, you can send an update letter to this e schools that accept updates. (Many do not.) However, med schools will not update your GPA even if you submit an update letter.

@honcho

What two courses are these?

@WayOutWestMom are you saying that the medical schools don’t care about your final transcript and grades?

Med schools care A LOT about final transcript and grades earned after an application has been submitted.

But med schools do NOT update or recalculate undergrad GPAs once an application has been submitted.

Final transcripts are required from all admitted students and are audited to verify that an admitted student has fulfilled admission requirements.

Grades that accepted applicants earn post application are also audited to make sure a student’s academic performance hasn’t tanked. All med school admissions are conditional and one of those conditions is continued acceptable academic performance. Failing a class, or even getting a bunch of Cs post-acceptance can result in a med school admission being revoked.

Several schools have requested D to submit updates for senior year first semester grades and plan for the rest of the classes to be covered in the final semester. These included both pending admissions as well as admitted.
