Do Microsoft Office packs ever go on sale?

I need one for my new computer, but I want to know if they have any sort of sale in stores after the summer during "back to school" shopping time.

I think it’s pretty much permanently $80, though I thought it had been $70 in the past.

Yeah its pretty much around the century mark unless you get it for free through your school.

First check with your school IT department or bookstore. More often than not you can get a better deal through your school than Microsoft, though I do remember Microsoft offering up office 2007 for $29.99 a few years ago when I purchased it. It seems like they have doubled the price on all of their student discounts in recent years.

If you do not want to pay the $70 you should check out Open Office or Libre Office. both are very capable office suites that are compatible with Microsoft office formats. And best of all they are free. I have experience with both seeing as Microsoft office does not run very well on linux, and can say that I have never had any problems exchanging documents with fellow classmates that are running Microsoft office.

I am not sure about sale, but they are lowered when a new one comes out…though not buy much so you are still going to have to shell out $100-$80 at most places for the Home and Student Edition.

In related Microsoft news, they’re offering the $29 Win7 Pro upgrade disk to eligible college students (need a .edu email address). Great deal if you want to get the latest OS or just want a backup disk. Only caveat is it’s only good for 1 machine.

There’s always been educational discounts.
[Microsoft Office Professional Academic 2010](http://www.microsoft.com/student/en/us/office/default.aspx)

The 2010 professional version for only $80. It’s $400 normal price.

At my son’s college, a student can buy a Windows upgrade for $15 and the MS Office Suite for $15.
