Do minors matter?

What's the difference between a math and stats minor?

Math probably requires more general math coursework and/or gives you more freedom in the courses you can choose and would likely supplement majors such as engineering, physics, and other non-research-oriented hard sciences (i.e., likely more practical use).
On the other hand, a stats minor would focus on statistics coursework, so it might be more useful for someone hoping to do research.

As for the question "do minors matter?" -- well, in what way are you asking?
In terms of job prospects, not really. They're mostly a supplement to your major (i.e., majoring in psychology with a minor in stats to become a researcher in social psychology by getting your Ph.D. -- yes...stats would be quite helpful there....) and/or simply to help develop another area of interest (i.e., a minor in photography)

I think a minor CAN matter if you play it up on your resume and if it fits with your career goals. A language minor could be a plus in many circumstances, for example. And any minor demonstrates interest in and some facility with a secondary field. A math or stats minor for a business or PoliSci major could demonstrate some "quant" capabilities that might be interesting to employers. Some colleges offer gradations like "major", "concentration", and "minor". You can juggle these to your advantage. Most employers won't get the major/concentration distinction, which is normally a credit count thing.

Minors can be really helpful. My mom was an econ major at a good LAC, but it was her math minor that set her apart from the crowd and got her a job at a top consulting firm.

I was thinking of math or stats minor as a Eng/Philosophy major. I am actually interested in being a copywriter or working in the business area after graduation. I also wanted some quantative skills aside from so much analyzing from Eng/Phil. The variety seems better.

So would a math or stats minor matter more in the business world?

i think minor's are great. my dad owns/runs his own business, and plans on retiring in approximately 5 years..says he was just gonna close down unless either my brother or me would like to take it over (its based a lot in china). therfore, im either going to major in whatever i want or major in business and minor in chinese, so that way i can bring the business to the next level by being able to speak the language.

i think it depends on your major. if you are a physics or cs major, a math minor wouldn't mean anything since it's probably nothing but one more class on top of the required math classes you have to take. Same goes with an astronomy minor on top of a physics major, a cs minor on top of an computer engineering major...

Math would be better in the business world.

How would a major in econ go w/ a minor in philosophy?
