Hello All!

So I only applied to UC Davis and UC Merced since these two UC's are closest to me. I was accepted to both and now I am stuck. So Merced is closer to me than Davis and financially it will be best for me to go to Merced but since I am planning on hopefully attending medical school I feel Davis offers a better program for me. But it looks like I am going to be attending Merced because of family and financial issues

I guess what i am asking is, Will medical schools look down on the fact the I transferred from a community college to UC Merced?

I am stuck and do not know if I should risk my financial and family situation and go to Davis or go to Merced. And if me attending Merced hurts my medical school plans then I am fully prepared to go to Davis. I still have not SIR'd and it is becoming close to June 1st. Any advice/answers would be appreciated! :)

Money should not be holding you back when it comes to a UC, there are avenues in place for all California residents to access public universities. I would definitely consider Davis if possible. There are so many financial aid opportunities, I’m just wondering if you’ve explored all of them? You should be able to make up the difference in tuition through FA and other avenues. Also, the difference in tuition between the two can’t be that much, right?

I just hear so much negative feedback about Merced, it’s almost more worth it to find a great CSU over Merced. Don’t mean to offend any Merced students out there, I’m sure it’s a fine school. But it’s reputation as the lowest ranking UC precedes itself.

Go to Merced and then apply to medical scholl at UC Davis. Don’t stress yourself out over this, get the best grades you can at Merced. It’s a good school. Good luck!

I agree with @fullload - Unless Merced gave you a regent’s scholarship go to Davis.

If you got a Cal Grant at Merced you’ll have one at Davis too which covers your whole tuition, otherwise there is Blue and Gold scholarship at both schools and the California Middle Class Scholarship.

College is an experience, some people choose wrong and regret it for their entire life you need to check out both campuses in person and choose the one you think you’ll thrive in.

No. People on these forums agonize over their decisions as if the school they attend makes so much of a difference. I’m not going to say Merced and Davis are clones, but in the end all the factors that matter come down to what you do. Get a good gpa, get to know some profs so you get strong recs, take part in research, spend some time getting exposure to the medical field in a volunteer or paid position (this is an unwritten requirement), study to get a good MCAT score. You can do these no matter which college you end up attending.

There is a good online booklet that you should read at <a href=“Amherst College Guide for Premedical Students”>https://www3.amherst.edu/~sageorge/guide1.html and for even more detail get a book on med school admissions so you understand what they look for.

@mikemac, I agree with you on the UCD vs UCM thing but the person is wondering if medical schools look down on JC transfers. I have no idea if it’s true or not but most people do say that medical schools look down on JC science classes. Can you expand on this?

@Zalrons, I thought the OP’s concern was whether med schools would somehow look down on a xfer to Merced but things would be just fine if they went to Davis instead.
