So ... this was news to me. I was at the WACAC SLC yesterday (don't worry about the acronym, it's a one-day workshop for college counselors) and this came up during a UC/CSU/CCC panel discussion: apparently the UCs do not accept online CCC courses! But since online CCC courses are not listed any differently than regular CCC courses on the transcript, the UCs do not make the effort to investigate. HOWEVER, if you volunteer the information to the UCs (mention in the Additional Comments or your personal statement) that certain CCC courses were taken online, then the UCs won't count them!

You’re kidding me! That really doesn’t seem right, especially since so many people look towards online classes because they are not able to do them at a college, be it for time conflicting work schedules, children, economical reasons, etc. Shouldn’t they disclose this information somewhere on there website so applicants know to avoid them before they apply? I’ve never even heard this!

Yikes! This is good to know. I took an accelerated hybrid English course that was partially online and partially in class. On my transcript though it just appears as a normal class so I didn’t make any distinction about it in my application. I’ve already been accepted to a few UCs so I’m guessing it’s a non-issue. Regardless, if it comes in the future, I’ll be sure not to mention it.

well, mums the word. if you are concerned then you should order an official transcript for yourself and check if there is any indication that the class was taken online.

Well, the issue is that I took a course through ITV (LACCD) - and when the transcript comes in, it does NOT say LA Mission College, it says ITV! And there was no ITV option in the UC App, so I just listed it under LA Mission’s (since it’s a service of LA Mission College). ITV are hybrid courses that meet on the weekends for 3-4 hours.

It’s supposed to be UC transferable, though. It’s also a UC eligibility course (English), so… if they don’t count it, I am in trouble. Although I did take the AP test and scored over a 3 for English Lang/Comp, so maybe they could use that.

The thing is UC’s themselves don’t even offer any online courses. The reason why is because the authenticity of the online courses are questionable–people always cheat. You can Google answers, look up your textbook, and etc.

Well, not really. HW is 40% of the grade, and you can look at the solutions manual and do whatever you want (just like a normal class). The final is 60% and it’s proctored. But my finals have always been proctored for the hybrid/online courses I have taken.

Asphyxiac, I’m in the same boat as you. I look English 102 through ITV and listed it under LA Mission college, but I was unaware that on our official transcript it was listed through ITV not LA Mission. I called the ITV office and the incompetent staff at the other end (it sounded like a student), was just affirming my questions when I tried to make sure the transcript was denoted as coming from La Mission college. My class was a bit different though, 12.5% of our grade was online HW through the discussion boards and the rest was all in class essays that were proctored. If worst comes to worst I think we may have a decent case at an appeal seeing as how the majority of the grade is through in class participation/exams.

I only know about the transcripts 'cause I had to order them when I filed for academic renewal at a non-laccd school. The counselor showed me the transcripts he received, and the ITV one said ITV, and was mailed in an ITV envelope.

I mean… I’m not sure what will happen, but I hope it works out. The class I took (English 101) is the same as the AP exam that I have credit for, so I guess they could take either. The English course fulfills my IGETC requirements no matter what (already got certified), and if they don’t want to give me credit for it, they can just use the AP score.

Asphyxiac, do you know if there was anything on the transcript that denoted that ITV was a program through LA Mission college, or that had La Mission college on it? It seems strange that they would only mark the transcripts with ITV on it, without acknowledging La Mission college. In the course catalog, it’s listed as a UC/CSU transferrable course and I doubt we’re among the first students using an ITV course to satisfy the UC requirements so I’d like to think we should be ok. If for some reason it doesn’t, unfortunately I really don’t have anything else to satisfy the requirement.

Total hog wash. If it’s an official class offered by a CCC, then it’s acceptable. They can’t deny you the class credit simply because of the manner it was taken if it is the same coursework as the approved in person class version. Unless official documentation can be produced from the UC websites, do not believe this. This is one of those things they would have to be honest about in writing was not acceptable.

Do you think that little blurb about the courses being via instructional television will matter?

Honestly, I can’t imagine that it would. These courses are designated as UC transferable by the CCC-UC articulation agreement. UC schools can’t just decide to selectively not honor that contract.
