I have done pretty terrible on my regents to say the least. Bio was my first “high school course” and I got an 84 on the regents. Earth Science 90, Chemistry 68, Global History 87, Algebra 86, Geometry 78. I’m currently a junior so I’m taking English, USH, and A2/Trig and I think I’ll get at least an 85 or above for those. I’ve been told to only worry about passing them, that it wouldn’t really matter in college admissions.
So, do SUNY schools and out of state schools look at your regents scores? Would my scores jeopardize my admissions to colleges? How much should I worry? Should I retake them? I’ve contemplated retaking at least Geometry and Chemistry but I’ve struggled with both of those classes and in the midst of SATs, ACTs, college prep, other courseloads, I don’t know if I can do better.
If I were to retake it though, it would coincide with the SAT that I’m taking in August. The preparation that I’m doing for the retake might take time away from my preparation for the SAT, plus I’m doing an internship, volunteer work, and possibly summer classes at our local community college.
Some SUNYs may make a particular Regents grade a requirement for getting into a particular program.
Otherwise, though, don’t sweat Regents grades. Realize that the only kids who take them are NY kids.
Spend your efforts on this year’s Regents, and on SAT/ACT. Don’t worry about the Regents you’ve already taken.
Or, if it still bothers you (and you have a snow day today anyway) take a look at some of the particular schools/ programs on the individual school websites.
When I took Regents many years ago the Regents grade was weighted as a final and part of my end of course grade. If that is true for you then it’s just another big final and part of your overall grades for most schools.
@“Erin’s Dad” I think that’s no longer how things work. My take on the Regents is that for NYS public schools and CUNYs they look at some tests to see whether you have the skills you need for certain programs. For example, they might look at the Regents math to see if you have the skills you need for engineering, that sort of thing. Outside of NYState and for NY privates and other privates, they really don’t mean much.
–At some schools the grades appear on the transcript so that will be seen by colleges (who can view the grades however they choose) and other high schools do not include them on the transcript. You can talk to your guidance counselor to see if the Regents grades appear on your HS transcript.
–High schools (and even different classes within the high school) factor the regents into the final grade differently. My kid’s had some classes where the Regents counted like a final and was 20% of final grade and others where the Regents hardly counted at all (5% of final grade).
At the SUNY’s my kids attended, which level history class you took as a gen ed was governed by the score you got on the AH Regents. If you got below 85, you took one type of course, and if above, another. At the CC one of my sons attended, admission to certain programs was based on your regents’ scores, which is fairer than your class grade because the test is standard throughout the state. Also, whether you needed to take placement testing was based on your regents scores in English and math. Also, if you score 85 or better on foreign language Regents (or equivalent since they don’t have FL regents anymore), you may get exempted at some schools. My friend was totally bent out of shape because her son got an 84 in Spanish and refused to retake it; now he has to take a year of FL in college.
My understanding is that OOS schools don’t even care about them.
