One of my Varsity who went to emory last year is thinking about transferring to a state school because he claims it is simply too hard to make the grades. Is that true among many emory students? I have recently been admitted to Emory, and this has been a major concern for me because I need to maintain a 3.3 gpa to meet my norm for guaranteed transfer. I plan to take courses centered around economics and political science. Any input is appreciated. Also, can someone post how Emory calculates their gpa? My unreliable source tells me that they have +/- system, which turns out deflating the students' grades since a grade of 80 comes out as 2.6, and even a grade of 90 becomes 3.6.

A 4.0 93-100
A- 3.7 90 - 32
B+ 3.3 87-89
B 3.0 83-86
B- 2.7 80-82

and so on

each professor has their own standard as to what is an A, A-, etc. but that's basically what it is. I think the school average GPA is around a 3.0. I think the grading is pretty fair.

What does this mean:
"I have recently been admitted to Emory, and this has been a major concern for me because I need to maintain a 3.3 gpa to meet my norm for guaranteed transfer."

Does that mean you're going to come here and then transfer out. 45K is a lot to spend on college if you already know you're going to leave.

I guess it depends on the professor, but in my opinion, you have to work pretty damn hard to fail a class here. I'm not saying that getting A's is easy or guaranteed, but they are not impossible to attain. You'll just have to work a little harder to get them, but isn't that already a given anyway?

Did he go to Oxford college or Emory College?
What was his classes at high school - I mean if he was smart enough to get into Emory College, then why was he having trouble there? The school accepts ppl who they think have the potential - maybe he was lazy? I'm not bashing him but there's probably a reason he wasn't doing well - too much partying, too hard courses(pre-med), or grade inflation at high school?

And what kind grades was he expecting to make? A+'s, As? Its hard first year but probably get easier as time progresses b/c you learn how to manage your time and manage your work.

In my experience, students do fairly well and grading is not overbearing. If you're admitted then I think you'll do at least decently as long as you work hard enough.

Are grades in personal fitness classes included in calculation for the semester gpa?

they can be. you have to take four PE classes (health, a ppf, and two electives) and you can take all but health pass/fail. pe classes are the only GERs that you are able to take pass/fail. even if you want it to count, it doesn't really have a large impact on your gpa since it only counts 1 credit. alot of people do it for the small grade boost.

lol. i just noticed the grammatical error! "do people MAKE the grades at emory." I need to write english gooooood.
