do all/any the above universities use such websites … i am really worried !

I think the general rule of thumb for this particular situation (not life in general) is that if you didn’t do anything wrong you don’t have to worry about it.

By this I mean that if you submit the same essay to multiple colleges or you sent your essay to someone you don’t know and they never got back to you that it’s much healthier to just assume that the colleges will work it out than freak out and assume that you’re going to get 10 auto-rejections.

I think I sent out one of my essays in particular to a few people I didn’t know. Only like one out of six got back to me on it, but I didn’t really care even though I knew that they could have stolen the essay. It was personal enough that they’d have to go to way too much effort to actually make it fit with their application. If it weren’t so personal I wouldn’t have sent it to people that I don’t know.

I think a bigger issue than the plagiarizers, though, is the people who mean well but can’t help themselves. Right in the middle of my college essay writing stretch I read an article about essay intros that caught admission officers’ eyes.

Worst. Idea. Ever.

For the next two weeks I couldn’t write my essays. All I had in my head was the line, “I change my name every time I go to Starbucks.” I couldn’t get it out. I’d think it was gone but then I’d sit down to type and it’d come right back in. I couldn’t think of ANYTHING that didn’t have to do with changing my name when I went to Starbucks. Why? Because that’s exactly the kind of thing I do. When I order pizza and they ask for my last name I usually make one up. And yes, when I go to Starbucks, I do frequently give them random names if it’s a Starbucks that asks.

It was horrible. I had a hard time believing I’d ever be able to write a personal essay again with that line stuck in my head. Eventually, the ONLY way I could get it out was to write fake mock-up essays (that I wasn’t going to hand in) that slowly deviated more and more from the theme. “I change my name every time I order pizza.” “I change my name tag every time I go to work.” “I change my accent every time I call a store.” “I sign my name differently every time I pay with my credit card.” Eventually I got my creative juices flowing and I could actually write again.

Moral of the story: Don’t tempt people with something they can’t refuse. The better your essay is the harder it will be for them to just edit it and move on.

^ LOL. great advice. ^-^ Thats why I wrote all of my essays while locked away in a room with just my notebook and a pen. hehe

Thanks for the help …

But I still want to know whether the universities I mentioned have a plagiarism check or use turnitin.com . I cannot sleep at night.

Other questions (out of curiosity)

1)What if a person send a essay say to Rice university and I (write the same essay to Texas - austin ) … will I get caught ? … how will i get caught? (P.S- i don’t steal essay’s =P)

2)How do admission officers come to know whether i am lying or not (when i am talking about my E.C’s …) I am an international student who is not applying through the common app. ??

How will the come to know whether i was the class president or not ?

Ty for the help !

If you’re really worried about it just write a letter to all of your schools that it’s possible your essay has been plagiarized (but that you’re not sure) and that if they have any questions to contact you.

1) I don’t know how you and the other person would end up writing the same essay without plagiarizing.

2) The truth is that they don’t know if you’re lying, but they have ways of checking. Your school information is on your application, so all they have to do is contact your school and ask.
