Do SATs rule you out?

In general, if a school lists middle 50% in the range of say 630-710, and you are around 550-570 with a UW gpa of 3.7 or so, decent ECs....what are your chances? I assume that with below 25% range on the SATs, you would basically need a great GPA with rigorous courses and super ECs....would that be accurate?

So, if you don't have those ECs or the most rigorous courses, is it even worth it to apply?

No, because think about it... the middle 50 is 630-710. What about the lower 25%? You could be one of those... =)

yes, but the lower 25% would have to have the most rigorous courses and ECs to make for the lower SATs...right? My question is what if you have a very good GPA, just average ECs, and not the most rigorous courses.

I believe that would be called a "reach". It's fine to have a few of those, but also have "matches" and "safeties".

Being below the 25% in anything would make the school a major reach and it would be highly unlikely to be admitted. The bottom 40% is largely comprised of recruited athletes, URMs, legacies and development candidates.

^^^what are development candidiates?

and what hmom5 is right, ppl who get accepted w/ lower sats have to have a huge hook (urm, athlete, legacy,etc) a 3.7 and "decent" ec's are not hooks.

def have some matches (where ur in the range) and safeties (where your above the range)

Development=large donors.

^Organ Donor?

^^^lmao no donors of large sums of money to the school

but if you gave a kidney to the head of admissions that'd be a pretty good hook
