Do certain colleges form relationships with specific high schools (public or private) and tend to accept a lot of students from them for that reason? The reason I ask is because we tend to send 1 or 2 people to a lot of schools, but there's a few that we consistently send a rediculously high percentage of students to. The graduating class last year was 121, and 12 students went to NYU (10%), 5 went to Wash U, 5 went to Boston University, and 6 went to George Washington University. The stats have remained relatively constant over the course of the last few years. Is this merely coincidence or is there something more behind it?

Probably some of both: 1) the colleges are familiar with your school so feel very confident in evaluating what is submitted by your students 2) success begets success – students see loads of alumni heading to those schools so they decide to apply even if the schools weren’t on their radar before 3) the numbers stay roughly the same b/c the student’s financials match those of previous students – since they’re from the same general area.

There are your coincidences.

In our small part of MN there is a small christian LAC that a lot of the kids from the town go to. My daughter won’t even look at it because she says it’ll be like an another 4yrs of HS. It is not a commuter school but the closest to the town where we live.

Now that I have access to naviance, I see that too for my DS’ school where graduating class sizes are about 80 each year. Some schools seem to like his hs while others have had 0 acceptances despite similarity in size, stats, selectivity, etc.

I don’t know if hate or love or whatever… But our HS sends kids to the most selective colleges in the country every admission cycle. There are kids going to school at Harvard, Yale, UChicago, WashU, and Duke in my little neighborhood. So I don’t understand why the one school that none of our students has been admitted to in the past six years is Dartmouth. Not without trying, on average there are 5-6 kids applying to Dartmouth every year. It’s just strange.

@jvtDad- Our school is the same way with Brown… We typically send 1-2 to every Ivy EXCEPT Brown.
