Do strong AP scores help you get into college (vs SAT II)?

I'm under the impression that a high SAT II score is much more valued than, say, a 4 or 5 in an AP test. How do colleges look at APs and SAT IIs during the admissions process?

Furthermore, would getting a 3 on an AP severely hurt your chances at a top school?

I think very few colleges actually consider AP credit when reviewing applications. Some public schools (ie. mine) only offer a couple of AP courses, which gives an unfair advantage to those who went to a decent school.

You self report your AP scores on college apps, so you can choose to or not to list it.

It definitely weighs in on your college application, especially if you get some degree of AP Scholar. Imagine how it would look if you didn't take any AP exams, versus the 3 that you get. The 3 may not severely hurt you, but you have to remember there is more to the college application than GPA and exams.
