It is a common practise in France for students to photocopy and sell their notes taken in a specific class to members of the incoming year. This is perfectly legal and can be very useful to complete one's own notes or in case of missed classes. Does this also exist in the States for core classes which remain pretty similar from one year to the other?

I've never heard of this practice. If someone misses a class, s/he can ask a classmate to copy the notes for the lecture. Many kids don't even bother. Also, in large lecture classes, professors often post their lectures notes on Blackboard for students to download after class.

i agree with mom. you can borrow somebody else's notes (for free) and just return them if you miss a lecture, or want to compare. Also, people have old exams from classes too, so just ask older students (if u know them) for some! I keep all my old exams from all my classes.

At UC Davis, you can buy notes from your class at "Classical Notes". It's an on-campus place that hires students to take really good detailed notes for a specific class (but it's usually the largest classes on campus). That way if you missed a lecture, you can buy them & know what happened.

But, as neelesh said, usually people don't want to pay, they'll just borrow or ask a friend in the class for missed notes. If you think ahead, you can even go to the course websites for classes you will take in the future in order to get practice exams & answer keys. Professors often recycle questions from old exams, and they change which one they post for practice each time they teach the course.

Yes, I know of people who sold their notes/exams and it's not legal. The notes and exams are technically the property of the professor. And most professors, at least here at my uni, do not use the same questions from old exams because of this.

I think notes are the most worthless study tool ever.

The book beats notes by a long shot.

This practice brings capitalism to a new low.

most of the professors i've had do not hand out the exams back. they tell you your score and you can see the test but you can't keep it.
