A friend said that some colleges won’t accept AP scores for either unless both are taken, which is the only scenario on which they reward credit (assuming the score was high enough). Is this true for all UC campuses?

Every campus may be different. You need to check each school to see if one or both classes will be accepted for credit. I know you get credit for both at UCD/UCSB and UCR.
