Do UC's only count the highest grade of a retaken class?

Hello all

I recently talked to a counselor from my CC and she told me that when retaking a failed class, UC’s count both the grades and balance them out. For example, I failed a class I took in the Fall but then retook it for an A. Instead of the A going into my GPA, it would count as a C. I remember reading on here that failed grades will stay on the transcript, but UC’s only count the highest grade. Could someone please clarify?

No they take the last letter grade. Not the highest, the last.

D, then C = C
D, then F = F
D then NP = D

^Yep. Your counselor is wrong.

And it only works with non-passing grades. They won’t accept a B if you originally got a C in the course. Both grades would count, since they are both passing.

If you retake a course (assuming you received a D), would you get credit for both courses or just the passing grade?

If you apply at your CC for “academic renewal with course repetition,” the D or F units are removed, the grade is not counted in GPA, but the grade is still listed on the transcript with a notation that it was repeated. The new, better grade is factored in.

Just the passing grade.

How about this scenario: I took pre-calculus math and got a B, then took it again as a refresher at a different CCC and got a C. Will only the B, only the C, or both show up in my transfer GPA?

You can’t retake a course with a grade of C or better (unless in certain situations, like a language refresher after a specified number of years). They will not count the retake. Lucky for you.

For some majors, Berkeley’s Haas for example, they say they’ll take the first attempt’s score at a major pre-req. So depending on what you’re looking to do, something like that could be taken into account as well.
