Do we need Microsoft Office 2010?

Obviously it may be a good investment to upgrade, but is it necessary? Could Microsoft Office 2007 suffice?

Microsoft Office version 2007 should be more than fine for FSU.

MS Office 2007 works just fine.

For the most part, any Office suite will work. I personally use LibreOffice, and many of my friends use OpenOffice.

Only time MS Office was really required for me was when I took CGS2060. I lucked out though and Microsoft was offering beta versions of Office 2010 at the time and just used that.

2010 didn’t change anything useful. It was just lawsuit related, IIRC.

If you get a deal on Microsoft Office 2010 I’d get it. Student versions are easy to secure: http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msstore/html/pbPage.Office_Compare_Editions?WT.mc_id=pointitsem_US_Google_5-OfficeSpecial_generic&wt.term=microsoft%20office&wt.campaign=*5+-+Office+(Special+Budget)+best+kws&wt.content=EhqYakCB&wt.source=google&wt.medium=cpc&WT.srch=1</a>

However, [OpenOffice[/url] is free and earlier versions of MS Office, going back to MS Office 2003 are just fine. Just download the free plug-ins to load .docx (created in Office 2007+) files: http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=3](http://www.openoffice.org/)

2007 version is a sound software, however if you are going to use it a lot and need more advanced features, 2010 is a better option. If someone is interested in buying MS Office 2010 packages or downloading a free 60 day trial, this is the website I’ve used to download my trial version from: [Try & Buy Microsoft Office - Packages Overview | Microsoft Office](http://buyoffice.microsoft.com/usa)

Don’t forget to check out the [FSU Computer Store](http://computerstore.fsu.edu/) in the Union.

I don’t have Office 2010 and it hasn’t been a problem with any of my classes.

I would just check the syllabus at the beginning of any course to make sure that things don’t change.

My daughter had to have it this year for her CGS class. But, as stated above, you can download a trial version of the software from Microsoft and you should be able to complete all of your assignments before your trial period expires. The professor actually suggested this in his syllabus.
