Would you recommend Microsoft Word 2007 or 2003 for college students? My laptop has the 2003 one, but it seems like most computers nowadays are 2007. Is it more convenient to use 2007 and do you find its features better and easier to use than 2003? Or, would it be better to buy 2010, since people will probably start using that more and more?

Wait a few months–Office 2013 is just around the corner. Also, if you buy it through the school, you can often get ridiculous discounts (the local college here offers Office 2010 for $30).

Office 2013 only works in Windows 7, 8, Server 2008 R2 and Server 2012, while Office 2010 works in XP, Vista, and 7. I don’t know what your laptop OS is but if it has Office 2003 it could be XP or Vista so keep that in mind.

To add to the conversation, has anybody ever purchased Microsoft University for college students. Is it adequate for college?

Just buy the regular Microsoft Office… you don’t need a special program to type an essay. Really don’t over do it. Never even heard of that, but it sounds like a waste of money when you can just buy the regular one at your school store for so much cheaper.

I use the 07 version

I use open office which is free and works just fine…

open office is free. im not a big fan of it but some people love it. if you are going to buy microsoft id want to wait to buy a newer version, since most schools will buy/get the new one when it comes up

I use 2007 on my old Windows laptop and it worked just fine for several semesters of college. I know a lot of people & schools have transitioned to 2010 though; it was used at my old community college. Its fairly similar to 2007 but I found it easier to work with, especially since I use a Mac now.

But I agree with some11no. Check with your school’s bookstore first. Many schools have a Microsoft agreement where you can purchase Microsoft Operating Systems and programs for as low as $10.
