Do we still have a chance?

How much can you afford to pay annually for your kid’s college education? How much?

UMass, Syracuse and Rochester don’t meet full need for all. And they won’t be cheap.

Do you qualify for need based aid? Is your son a U.S. citizen or green card holder.

I get it. You will need to involved if you are paying for college, and really, we need to know if you are full pay and if not, what your budget is to best help you.

If affordable, he should send in an app to U Pittsburgh today.

Look at the College of Holy Cross which has a great Chemistry program and I would add in SUNY Bing and/or Stony Brook

D20 had very similar stats (96.6/100 UW GPA, 1460 SAT, 5s on 6 AP exams) 2 years ago and every single one of the schools you list would have been a reach for her, except Syracuse which we couldn’t have paid for.

Not to sound like a broken record, or add to your stress level, but his chances are anything but guaranteed for the schools you list. You really need to get a handle on what you can afford and then posters here can help you identify some last minute safer options.

I think the application deadlines for Bing has passed. But Stony Brook is Feb 1 @sybbie719

Ok…I looked up some costs for the schools more likely for acceptance on his list.

UMass $53,000 annually

U of Rochester. $74,000 annually

Syracuse. $75,000 annually.

I don’t believe any of these meet full need for all accepted students. @Creekland can verify Rochester.

So…can you pay the net costs to attend any of these colleges!

Are you eligible for need based aid…which would be possible at some of the other schools on his reachy list.

Holy Cross, SUNY BIng deadlines were Jan 15.

Edited my post to reflect SB’s deadline of Feb 1, so still time there!

It looks like from the SUNY site that you can still apply after the deadlines…but it’s sort of unclear what the odds of acceptance after the deadlines is.

I’m sure @sybbie719 will give us the info later today.

In terms of acceptances I’d guess your son will be in at UMass and Syracuse. Probably no at CMU, Tufts and BC. BU and NU are tougher to chance - he’s a great student and would probably have been a yes at either ED, but RD very tough at both those schools. If he likes (and you can afford) UMass and Syracuse you will be ok - if not, you need to find another 1-2 safeties.

If you do want to add SUNYs, I looked in common app and Stony Brook, Geneseo, Buffalo, Albany deadline all Feb 1. Some SUNYs are rolling admission like New Paltz, Cobbleskill, Buff State…not sure if any of those make sense, but could be safe options.

You/your S can search ‘SUNY’ in common app and see all of the deadlines for the full list of SUNYs. Hopefully sybbie719 can tell us which may be the better math/chem options.

OP still has time to get a SUNY application submitted.

He needs to speak with his counselor as a number of schools are doing on the spot admissions next week (regents week- but the regents has been canceled). He really needs to speak with is counselor.

Which SUNYs should OP prioritize for math/chem?

Mom has not said what type of school OP is interested in. I feel from her post, she may have believed that SUNY was beneath him, which is why this discussion what not had.

Mom has not said what kind of school op is looking for. OP should have tossed an application into the university centers- UB, Bing, Albany and Stony Brook (he is not a lock for CS at UB or Stony Brook), she can use the SUNY program manager to look for schools that offer what her son is interested in.

I’d add some in-state public safeties to this list.

SUNY Binghamton, Stony Brook, and Buffalo seem to have the most highly-regarded chemistry departments within the system. And if you’re in NYC and need something that is commuter-friendly, CUNY Hunter College.

My daughter got merit from UMASS (we are from NJ) with a 1470 SAT ACT 7 AP’s 3.9unweighted (1 b). Her twin got a little merit from Syracuse with a 1390 ACT 3.6 unweighted. She was 10th in her class, he was 32nd (school doesn’t rank, but my daughter got a peek. There is no way we could afford Syracuse, I didn’t know he applied.

U Roc is sort of full need, but it depends upon their definition of need and includes federal loans.

I don’t know if they’re likely to get accepted or not, but they have a shot. The 5s on his APs and 33 ACT should be helpful.

I’d agree with tossing in a last minute app for a SUNY or two and possibly Pitt if they wanted to be sure of getting an acceptance.

Whether schools are affordable or not will be up to the family.

So Rochester considers AP scores in admissions? Some schools do not.

I don’t have insider information, but kids who do well on their AP tests tend to get admitted more. It’s all up to who the competition is I imagine.

Their particular high school could garner points too. I don’t know what their school is, but I know admissions talked about some schools in NY being good sources of students when we were there. Naviance would help with that info.

Given the new info (majors), I suspect Umass and Syracuse are likely. But are expensive.

Rochester does meet 100% of need but we don’t know if OP has need. If not do mom and dad want to pay more than $300k?

This is why parents need to be involved up front and understand the budget implications before choosing schools to which to apply.
