Do you consider how social people are at your dream college?

Do you imagine hanging out with cool people in your college? Do you consider the "popularity" or "attractive girls/guys" at your dream college?

I do to an extent, and I want to know if it's just me.

I could never imagine going to a school like MIT with all those math geniuses (no offense, just my thoughts.). Too many people seem to sort of have that "high school geek" quality. I'm not saying anything about myself when I make these assertions, but I just want to know if you consider "not very good looking students/unsocial students" a big drawback to a college.

Hmm?

Not at all.

Honestly, every type of student exists at virtually every coed university and who you associate with in high school probably won’t differ too much from who you associate with in college. Attractive girls/guys exist everywhere (even MIT), and if you hung out with them in high school, you probably will in college as well. The whole ******** about some socially awkward HSer suddenly becoming an alpha male in college is almost entirely a myth perpetuated by stupid movies, although there are obviously extremely rare exceptions.

^I don’t quite agree with that. College and high school are two different things, two different contexts. In high school, only cool people get invited to parties (hence only cool people get the hot girls/cool friends). In college, almost everybody goes to parties/bars/etc (hence nerds/geeks/socially-awkward people will meet hot chicks as well or at least have better chances than in high school).

To the OP: Yes, sociableness is a big factor for me. I don’t want to have nerdy friends in college. I need smart + cool friends.

Sure they’ll have a better chance, but I doubt the majority will be that much more successful.

^there are a lot more random hookups in university though. in high school there’s more of a social stigma with that.

I am everywhere!

Honestly, I didn’t have much license in the college selection process. But I would have never let the sociability of the studentry of a particular college affect my selection. If the people there are good looking, that’s a slight plus, but the lack of knock-outs wouldn’t have been a knock on the college itself.

Me, I can kick it with anyone. Ugly, hot, smart, dumb, sociable, withdrawn–just not mean or conceited people and most definitely not Dostoyevsky and Nietzsche addicts.

What’s wrong with high school geeks lol?

I mean, when it comes to hot girls, all you need is one, right?

Of course, but even in college, a socially inept kid isn’t going to randomly hookup with a smokeshow unless roofies are involved.

Though it sounds extremely narrow and superficial, this is what I’d prefer too. I guess we’re all wired differently.

^ Well how are your current friends?

My friends are not nerds/geeks.

Neither are mine. Maybe 1  But thats IT!

Do you avoid nerds and geeks or do they avoid you? If someone whom you perceive as a nerd or a geek approached you, would you befriend that someone?

Then there’s not much to worry about.

It’s not that I avoid geeks or anything. I can totally strike up a conversation about AP scores or something since (well I’m on this website) I’m into academics.

Just hanging out wouldn’t work out. Not compatible I guess. I could be friends with a geek, but not a chill friend…

Well there are “social people” at every college, so there’s no need for for you to be concerned based off of your description of your current situation.

It was more of a poll thread, but yeah. Where do you want to go Jersey? :D

haha my friend and I are talking about AP gov and I didn’t even take the class (we both graduated btw)

I guess it depends on what you consider hanging out. I remember the line in a college essay I’ve ever read was “I think people, not activities(or some other word like that) make fun.”

Geeks are just as physically capable of doing anything non-geeks are. Well, if you want them to show you how to dunk a basketball or something, some might not be able to. But neither can most non-geeks.

There are many schools that I would like to attend; I’m not particularly attracted to any one college.

Awkwardness in most physical activities (excluding ultimate frisbee) is usually included in the “geek” stereotype.

^that’s not really defining easy-going/cool type of ppl. Geeks are usually socially-awkward.
