When admissions committees review people's applications that are perhaps "reach" or "underqualified" students, they just laugh at it and throw it in the trash? Whenever I think of college rejections, this image always comes to mind, even though I know that it is completely exaggerated.

What makes one person less qualified than another?

I don’t think they really laugh at anyone’s applications. I thought of this too, especially with my essays. After I submitted my applications, I would sit in bed thinking, I wonder if they read my essay and laughed their a$$es off about how weird/dumb/stupid it was. I think that the admissions people are well trained and consider all applications carefully without laughing at it or throwing it in the trash, even if the applicant’s scores/grades/essays are hilariously low or bad.

Then again, I don’t know jack about what they do in those rooms. Who knows, maybe they laugh. If they do, that’s one sad reality.

In light of how boring reading application essays can be, some laughter probably happens.
